NHL Three Stars: Begin takes advantage of Howard’s blunder; emotional night in Boston
No. 1 Star: Steve Begin, Calgary Flames
Yes, seriously, Steve Begin. Sure, he got some help from Jimmy Howard (see: Dishonorable Mention) but the Flames forward scored two goals in the third period to lead Calgary to a 3-2 upset of the Detroit Red Wings. Not bad for 11:49 of total ice time. Miikka Kiprusoff made 36 saves.
No. 2 Star: Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres
It was an emotionally charged night in Boston, as the Bruins played their first game since the Boston Marathon bombings. Miller played the spoiler, as the Sabres goalie made 41 saves and three more in the shootout to give Buffalo a 3-2 win. Cody Hodgson’s third-period goal tied it; Drew Stafford won it in the skills competition.
No. 3 Star: Brenden Morrow, Pittsburgh Penguins
Morrow had two goals and an assist in Pittsburgh’s 6-4 rout of the Montreal Canadiens. Morrow scored goals Nos. 10 and 11, and set up Brandon Sutter’s second of the night in the second period. He also tangled with PK Subban:
Honorable Mention: Columbus does it again, as Fedor Tyutin’s overtime goal gave the Blue Jackets a 3-2 win at the Anaheim Ducks. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves. Blake Comeau and Matt Calvert had the other #Lumbus goals. … Gabriel Dumont of Montreal andSami Vatanen of Anaheim scored their first NHL goals. ... Douglas Murray scored his first of the season. … Daniel Paille, Chris Kelly and Thomas Vanek had a goal and an assist.
Did You Know? Players from the Bruins and Sabres wore ''Boston Strong'' decals on their helmets.
Dishonorable Mention: Peter Budaj was pulled after giving up three goals on nine shots, as Carey Price finished the game with three goals on 20 shots. … Finally, the Wings/Flames game featured some brutal goals. First, this communication breakdown by Howard and his teammates on the power play:
And then Miikka Kiprusoff gave up this center ice goal to Johan Franzen. Ugh:
