Red Wings defeat Sharks in shootout
Detroit, playing for the second time in two nights, snapped a three-game road losing streak and beat the Sharks in San Jose for only the third time in its last 12 tries. Joe Thornton forced Detroit's Justin Abdelkader into a turnover, then fed Couture for a one-timer from the right circle. Martin Havlat fanned on Marleau's cross-ice feed during a 2-on-1 in the period's opening minute. The Wings' best chance came when Eaves bulleted a one-timer from the right circle that San Jose goalie Antti Niemi deflected. Scouts from the Blues, Rangers, Oilers, Canucks, Coyotes, Bruins, Penguins, Islanders and Flyers were in the press box.
