If I remember correctly, there were a couple of Bernier threads early in the summer, so I'm sure this was covered ad nasueum, but just because he requested a trade doesn't mean he'll be a pouty b***h if he doesn't get traded before the deadline or the end of the season. DL isn't just going to trade him for the first bag of chips that gets offered, and if Bernier is letting his desire to be traded affect his play when he does get put in the lineup, the offers aren't going to be great, so it's in his best interests to continue being a team player.
Richardson is somewhat redundant. Westgarth is not.
Too early to move Bernie.
At some point, you have to think that one of those kids in the minors is going to be ready to make the jump (Jones) and that Bernier will get moved to accommodate his request. That WON'T be until they are absolutely certain that Quick has recovered and returned to form of last spring.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

First of all "redundant" could be viewed as being synonymous with "depth" which is a good thing...
Richardson is a perfect 4th line/healthy scratch. As evidenced by his role in the Kings last few playoff runs including the one where they won the Stanley Cup.
Richardson can play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or ideally 4th line minutes or he can be a healthy scratch.
Westgarth can play 4th line minutes. The low end of 4th line minutes. He's not particularly intimidating as an enforcer and the Kings just won the Stanley Cup with King, Nolan, Brown, Richards and even Kopitar getting into altercations at one time or another.
And just to make it more absurd.... Westgarth is OLDER than Richardson. Not by much I grant you.... but there is simply no argument other than "the team needs an enforcer" to retain Westgarth.
And we've clearly seen that this team does NOT "need" an enforcer.
I'm with you on the enforcer front.
I get what you are saying about depth, and your stance on the fact that Richardson can play all over the lineup, but go back and look at the line combinations I posted.
This assumes that Clifford, a perfect 3/4th liner skillset, is a healthy scratch already. You have Penner, who fits both of the top line molds, as a third line left wing.
And you aren't taking into account anybody down in Manchester being just a phone call away.
Westgarth is my choice simply because of his thuggery skills. Clune is the next best option, and he's in Manchester.

Cliche is in the Kings' plans. Don't be surprised to see him.
Westgarth is just not going to play under Sutter. But you don't really save anything. He gets waived/sent to ahl.
Got to consider a potentially compressed schedule. Bernier gets more time in net. Need the fill in guys (richardson)
Also have to consider when the buyout has to be taken by. If team has until end of next year, and there are huge penalties for those 10+ year contracts, and production falls off, Carter or JWill might get squeezed to make room to sign Brown.
And looking at the salaries, Richards got screwed. This was his highest paying year on his contract (8.4M)
