I hope Bruckheimer buys the Kings.
I hope Bruckheimer buys the Kings.
Whatever happens with this sale, let the record state that Phil Anshutz was the Kings owner when they won their first Stanley Cup.
I don't give a damn whether the owner shows support by going to games. IMO, that just begs for him to get "involved". The reason AEG has worked out (and, yes, it took time) is that they didn't meddle in the business of hockey. As their fingers got out of the pie the better the team got...mostly after DL got here.
As to Buss "running the Kings like the Lakers": I'm sorry that just isn't accurate. He bought both teams at the same time so in the very late 70s, early 80s there was no such thing as "running them like the Lakers". That process (whatever way you defind it) just didn't exist. The FACTS are Buss had more success in basketball so over time (my estimate is about 1984) he began to IGNORE the hockey team and eventually dumping it into the "capable" hands of Bruce McFraud.
jom
I didn't said he NEVER ever showed up to games. Yes, every once in a blue moon he would show up, and yes, he showed up when the team was making noise in the playoffs. Big deal. I don't buy for a second that he really cares about the Kings. Leiweke yes, Anschutz, no. Maybe the team has grown on him, but it's not like he was a hockey or even a sports fan looking to buy a team because that's what he loves. The fact is that Anschutz only bought the Kings as a means to build Staples Center and develop the surrounding area. It's not like he was a Kings fan or even a sports fan before he bought the team.
Again, you are assuming I dislike Anschutz or think he ran the team poorly. I don't. I'm just saying I WOULD prefer an owner who shows that he cares more, who is from LOS ANGELES, and who has enough money to run the franchise competitively. You are automatically making the HUGE assumption that just because an owner cares that they are going to try to run the hockey operations. That's no more true than assuming a non fan isn't going to invest in the team.
Buy low, sell high.
AEG is pretty much on top right now. Kings Stanley Cup, check. Galaxy Championship, check. LA Live Complete, check.
I wouldn't be suprised to find out that LA is not getting that Stadium and they are out of the race for an NFL team right now.
“Given the success of the management team and employees in establishing AEG as one of the premier real estate development, live sports and entertainment platforms in the world, as well as the value AEG has created with the strategic assets that comprise its platform, this is an appropriate time to transition AEG to a new qualified owner,” said Cannon Y. Harvey, president of the Anschutz Co.
The NFL wants a team in LA, the second largest market in the US without a team is a gaping hole that needs to be filled.
What will probably happen is one of the big real estate companies will come in, but up AEG, then start selling off non core assets, including the Kings, it may take a little time, Jerry Bruckheimer could be drooling at that idea.
