beedee, you cannot take the carpool on the 110 wo a metro fastrack. even if u carpool. u can if u have the fastrack sensor switched to the carpool.
I use to go 405/605/105 then 110. I know its a mish mash but its faster than the 5 and all the other routes.. With fastrack, unless you have the sensor u cannot use the carpool lane, even if you have the min 2 ppl for carpooling. If u have fastrack then u are good to go.
405 to the 110 North for sure. Don't take the 110 to the 10 though. That transition sucks! Once you get close to USC, exit on Exposition Blvd. It will drop you off on a side street. You then go straight through the offramp light (the DMV will be on your left), the road banks left, and then you will be on Exposition. However, the next major intersection is Exposition and Figueroa. Just take a right on Figueroa (you will pass the Galen Center at USC) and then Staples will eventually be on the left hand side a few miles down.
carpool on the 405 is the only way to get to staples from south OC. any other way is asking for an aneurism
good point regarding the new fastrack they put in place, grrrrr! my wife has a transponder, and my car is registered to it, so i'll be picking her up (in long beach) along the way.
regarding parking, i usually park in a lot off of Fig, just south of Pico, but those guys always change the price depending on the game that day. where is another $5-$10 lot?
Granted I do it in the morning, but the 5/91/110 is the quickest when there's traffic since you can do the carpool lane for about 98% of the time. 405/110 is fine, but not noticeably quicker/slower so I never bother with it. Just check sigalert.com before you leave and take the freeways with the least amount of traffic that day.
It's been said, but best I find is carpool 405 to 110. We don't have fasttrack, so we're now forced to the regular lanes on the 110. It's taken a bit longer on the stretch north of the 105, but hasn't been too crazy yet. The worst part by far is Irvine through HB.
We get off at Adams and hang a right. Left at Hill. Bank to the left onto Olive. Three parking options: Left into the lot between Pico & 12th for $5; park on the street between Pico & 12th (meters until 8pm now at $.50/hr); or hang a right on 12th & park there (meters until 6pm). Why the hell are the meter times different on 12th? No idea.
(If you want to search closer street parking, you can go left on Pico, right on Hope, right on 12th... or left on 11th, left on Hope, left on 12th...) There are like 3 lots off of Grand that should all be $5 and a number of small ones in that same price range in the big square between Pico & Olympic & Hill & Flower.

Take the 405 North to the 110 North, Get off 2 exits before the ten right after the Colosseum sign on the right of the freeway. Straight off the freeway, road curves to the left, second right onto fig, north to your parking spot of choice.
Experience: leaving econ lectures at 6:20 and being in my seat for the drop of the puck. probably want to leave closer to/before 6 though.
