The year Doughty reported to camp 20+ pounds overweight he was crap for the first 3 months of the season... just sayin'.
Richards is a very special kind of player and the team is lucky to have him.

You don't really think that I see it any different do you? Mike Richards is and has been one of my favorite players in the league. He was long before he was ever a King. But I hate that as a professional who is paid 5.75 mil per year, and a team leader he did not prepare himself for the season.
And just because in games 9-13 he is starting to play to his potential, it doesn't invalidate my bitch that he wasn't ready to start the season. If he's the leader everyone want to anoint him as...He should have had himself ready to go in game 1.
It also pisses me off that we can't say that, without it turning into a Kopitar thread. Kopitar has sucked lately, but that has nothing to do with Richards not being ready to start the season.
The fact that Richards had a ballsy game today doesn't make this thread ridiculous in any way. Maybe benching Richards wasn't the answer (I never said it was), but he deserves every bit of criticism he receives for not being ready to start the season. Same goes for Doughty when he showed up a fat-faced, frumpy, over-paid party boy. Notice how there was no talk today about Toew's game "rounding into form"? That's how a Captain does it! And he was even taking part in the negotiations!
I'm not sure that there is a direct correlation with rust from a completely out-of-the-norm offseason in every way (Stanley Cup win and extended by lockout), but let's just go ahead and say there is.
Ever think that it's possible that he tried to have himself ready to go, but whatever he tried didn't work? For example, let's say he rested, exercised, and trained the amount he felt was best to both restore his body and be ready for a potential season... but underestimated how tough it would be to get back into the speed of the game?
You make it sound like you are 100% sure that he did nothing but sit on his ass and eat cheetos all offseason long.
No, actually I don't.
I make it sound exactly like his coach is saying..."he wasn't prepared for the season". Not as in needs a game or 2 to get the legs back, but game is coming around at the 9 game mark.
Why is this man above criticism?? I love the guy too, but I can still be objective enough to notice his preparation is/was lacking. It's also more of an issue because of the shortened season.
Just to bump this again to be near the Richards for Captain thread.
How much do you guys want to wager that in 6 months time this thread will reappear out of nowhere and someone will post something like "What do you mean Bench Richards??? He was instrumental in getting us to <blank>!" Lol! It always happens.
BTW, Im over benching him. That was sooo two plus weeks ago. There are too many others that need a good bench warming now. But carry on!
Maybe we can just keep modifying the title to the new flavor of the week?
