I think any trade proposals need to include contract information to be of any use. Take for instance this:

Philadelphia: Claude Giroux and Ilya Bryzgalov

    Then compare it to this:

Philadelphia: Claude Giroux, Ilya Bryzgalov, and the 7 years remaining on his $5.6 million cap hit as a compliance buyout...

Ah, now someone's thinking. It still doesn't get you Claude Giroux, BUT taking a terrible compliance buyout off their hands could get a team like Philly to overpay.

Dean has 2 of these coming to him, and no plans (as of yet) to use either one. Philly not only gets rid of Bryz and his buyout, but can also buyout somebody else.
Dean either uses the buyout this summer, or uses Bryz as a backup next season and then buys him out that summer.

So what would a Philly overpayment for Bernier look like? I'd ask for Simmonds plus a 1st plus the negative value of that buyout.

    Default Bernier for ...

    How about this...

To NYI: Jake Muzzin, Jonathan Bernier and Dwight King

To LA: Nino Niederreiter, NYI 1st round pick

I could imagine that the Islanders are a team that is seriously inquiring about Bernier. They aren't in our conference which make them an ideal trading partner, and they are very thin at the goaltender position.

Obviously waiving Dipietro gives them a little more money to play with, where they would be able to lock up Bernier as they're starting goaltender for many years ahead. Muzzin is a promising young defenseman, who I feel has gotten outplayed by both Drewiske, and Ellerby on the main roster. Dwight King, to be honest I just am not a fan of his game, I don't feel he brings a whole lot offensively, and may be valued more somewhere else.

With Nino, I think he'll become a 25-30 goal scorer in the next 2 years. He's a big strong forward with a high ceiling. I think he would be a perfect fit for the Kings heavy possession game, but much more capable offensively than guys like Penner, King, and Nolan. He's still very young, and adds some much needed scoring touch to our farm system.

The 1st is tricky, because NYI may be unwilling to give it up as it should be anywhere from #5-#10 overall. The problem with them holding onto it is, outside of the no brainer pick John Taveres, they're drafting has not been very good. I don't believe they think there is a better option at goaltender in this draft than Bernier, even though after all it is Garth Snow.

prospects are just that...PROSPECTS! you hold on to your prospects and let them play. a prospect has no trade value until they've proven their worth. bernier has not proven his worth but has demanded a trade, hence the quagmire!

AHL goalie of the year? If only the Kings had -- let's say -- a TWO TIME AHL goalie of the year! I'm sure we would have won multiple Cups. Right?

Everything else about Bernier amounts to potential, and potential only means you haven't done squat. No GM who wants to keep his job is going to trade all stars for a backup with potential, which is why only the Calgary deal is even remotely plausible.

True Value on an NHL ready goaltender is a 2nd round pick plus some other stuff (Maybe 2 3rd round picks). A goaltender by himself is NOT going to return us a 1st round pick.

Colorado had massive wood for Varlamnov and thus it returned a 1st round pick PLUS.

I get wanting a prospect and a pick, but that's not where we are at as an organization anymore. Sure, keep the cupboard stocked, but not at the expense of the NHL Roster.

Now if you want to move those players to UPGRADE a position, like moving them to get a left wing upgrade for King, then I see it. You don't want to move those 3 for Iginla, unless you're getting Iginla signed to a sensible contract for a few more years.

Not all stars, but they will move a chunk of assets if they feel they are getting the right goaltender for their team:

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

This isn't a bad offer but the NYI are quite fond of their two top goalie prospects Poilin (who was just recalled) and Nilsson. I don't think they make a play for Bernier IMO.
