The PA outlined this calculation a while back and finally agreed to it applying to existing contracts in early December. The part about splitting the cap recapture between teams is new (at least it wasn't specified in the old NHL proposals).
I didn't follow the negotiations that carefully so I figured it was always possible I missed something.

Guys like Pronger (5 seasons counting this one left) and Savard (also 5 years with this one) are legitimately injured so I don't have a problem with those guys being on LTIR. I just can't see the league letting teams stash guys who are NOT legitimately hurt on LTIR, potentially for years at a time. Other teams would have a cow.

In the last CBA the league had the authority to make teams prove that the player on LTIR was legitimately injured long term. I imagine that will be the same in the new CBA. I would also imagine that periodically the player will have to undergo exams to prove that he is still legitimately injured. They aren't going to let one diagnosis last for 5 seasons without some proof that the player is still injured.

What could in theory screw a team like the Flyers, especially because Pronger's is an over 35 deal and he has a NMC, is if he makes some sort of recovery a year or two down the road that would leave him unable to qualify for LTIR. Yes it's unlikely. But if it happened, Philly would then have like a 39 year old Pronger with concussion issues that hasn't played in 3 years that you couldn't hide on LTIR. That contract is untradeable and he can't be stashed in the minors to get the cap relief. I can't see the Rangers or Penguins for example sitting there and not complaining if the Flyers were using LTIR for cap relief for years if Pronger got healthy enough to be cleared to play.

I'm disappointed with how civil the conversation has been in this thread. This is not the LGK I've grown to love.

    You've changed.

    I think it's awesome.

Now we won't have any of that "so and so never talked to my client so we signed with San Jose on day one" malarky.

You'll know pretty damned well who talked to whom about what and when.

So if Kovalchuk retired in 6 years, the Devils would get a cap of hit of like 15 million for the remaining 6-7 years of the contract.

    Fun !!

Has there been any word on hiding contracts in the minors? I haven't seen anybody discuss it...

Once the season starts, I'm sure the LGK we've all come to know over the years will return.

And it will eliminate the shuttling of draft picks around too.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

Just checking the Kings out on capgeek, I may be losing my mind here, but I would swear that a couple of days ago the Kings had $11.?m in cap space for the 2013-14 season, it's now showing $14.8m.

Did something change or am I going senile ?
