MAYBE Justin Azevedo and Colton Yellow Horn are 2 different players and will be judged on an individual basis. Just because one small guy doesn't make it with the Kings, doesn't mean the next won't.Quote:

I've seen a lot of MVP caliber players in juniors that can't modify their game to fit the AHL/NHL. I did read your post and i'm glad you think he's awesome. I just like this guy's story and I hope he continues to impress so that management takes a hard look at him next year. Manchester has been a lot more potent offensively since he got there. Weal wasn't doing much at all, and now he's been putting up points pretty routinely. Yellow Horn/Kozun/Weal has to be the smallest line hockey has ever seen...Quote:

For sure. What makes it so hard to predict is that's the story of every guy under 5'8 who makes it as far as the AHL. I mean that is almost word for word what they said about Azevedo, Moller, Roe, Weal, Kozun, etc... Makes me wonder if Theo Fleury or Martin St. Louis could crack an NHL roster if they were starting their careers today, just based on the rarity of any rookie walking into top 6 minutes these days. Easier for Brayden Schenn, for example to break in with bottom 6 minutes... not an option for the smaller guys.Quote:

Colton is talented and I would love to see the success story but I don't see it happening. I used to be a fan of small talented guys (add Cliff Ronning to the list of 5'8" guys who thrived in the NHL) but have really soured on them in the past 5 years or so. The issue being if they aren't scoring, then they aren't bringing much else to the table. Guys like Nolan and Clifford who are always hitting bring some intimidation; physics and averages seem to indicate that big guys come out of the corner with the puck more often than little guys.
Also, ECHL or even AHL dominance does not translate to the NHL. When I was in college, I saw Trevor Jobe score 10 point in an ECHL game. And some guy in the crowd was yelling at him the whole time "you're no McDougall" (apparently Bill McDougall was the original preeminent ECHL scorer). I'll get excited about this feel good story of Colton impresses in Kings camp rather than in the minors.
