Default Darryl Sutter's Wit and Wisdom - Part Deux!

One of the things I really missed about hockey season is Darryl quotes. Good to see coach is in mid-season form already.

On whether he has “given much thought” to the goaltending rotation this week:
It’s not a rotation. [Reporter: Quick in both games?] I don’t know. He might get hurt in warmup.

On Dustin Brown’s assertion that there hasn’t been much change over the last several seasons, and whether it makes his own job easier:
No, because our left wing was the lowest scoring left wing group in the National Hockey League last year. So other than trying to move Frattin from right wing to left wing, it’s certainly a big challenge for us because Jeff Carter was the leading goal scorer in the Western Conference, and at the same time, he played with guys in the point part of it, he was only able to get seven or eight assists because nobody on the other side could score. So that’s a huge thing. And then our third line was the lowest scoring third line in the National Hockey League. So is ‘change’ not good? There better be ‘change’ in terms of performance.

That third line could be fixed by bringing up Toffoli, Vey and Pearson instead, but then our stifling full-court defense would suffer.

On what he takes from the first two games of the season:
    Two points.

On whether “two games was too much in two nights”:
No. [Reporter: What happened?] It was a pretty close game, wasn’t it? [Reporter: They came on strong, and they evened the shots.] Got to ask them why they came on strong. I thought we were pretty good.

Sutter had another golden line about Penner in the LA Times today, referring to him as one of the several guys who played with Richards and Carter that were just "one or two goal" guys. Sadly, my paper has been recycled, so if one of the other five people who still gets the newspaper is on here, feel free to post the actual quote.

They have these fancy "internets" now. You should check them out. They even have newspaper articles and stuff.

"We've had two-, three-goal scorers play there the past two years. Dustin was a two-, three-goal scorer that was in and out of the lineup," Sutter said of Penner, who is now with the Ducks. "We've had kids in there. "We've moved Mike over, moved Jeff to center. It's been a big hole in our lineup."

    On Winnipeg's crowd:

It’s sort of like San Jose, but the crowd is ‘loud good,’ meaning they understand what is going on.

It was tiny in the original post. Just wanted to emphasize the awesomeness.

On the “mock cheer” Quick received when making a save shortly after he allowed the third goal:
It’s pretty normal. [Reporter: I mean, for what he’s done for this team, is that not a little cruel?] Nope. [Reporter: Did you have a chance to talk to him?] No, there’s nothing to talk about. He dropped his stick. What do you want me to talk about? Tell him not to drop his stick? [Reporter: I don’t know. Put him at ease or something.] Not a chance. It’s his job. Stop the puck. So obviously he thought he didn’t need a stick.

On whether the turnovers are a “byproduct of early season hockey”:
You know what, don’t get so philosophical about everything. You just asked me the same friggin’ question, right? I said ‘Drew turned it.’ It’s not a ‘team turn.’ When you have the puck on your stick, and you give it to a top player on their team, that’s not a team turnover, that’s a top player turnover, and Muzzin, [is] going to have to learn not to turn the puck over if he wants to play, period. So that’s not a team problem.

On whether he called his brother to wish him a happy 57th birthday:
Which one? [Reporter: Brian.] No. October 7th, that’s right. October 7th. Well, there’s lots of ‘em.His birthday used to always be on the start of NHL season, always that weekend. Thank you. I’ll remember that.

You know what, this is the first thing that I've read about yesterday that has me feeling better. We have a pretty awesome coach. And if non-nonsense is what is needed right now (and it is), then he's the right guy to make that point. Full confidence the mistakes of yesterday are yesterdays and not tomorrows.

    Sutter on Muzzin

    lisa dillman ‏@reallisa 27m
Sutter on Jake Muzzin: "He's struggling a lot."
    lisa dillman ‏@reallisa 23m
More Sutter on Muzzin: "You’re not going to win many games if you’re a guy playing significant minutes and you’re a high-minus player.”
    lisa dillman ‏@reallisa 18m
Sutter admitted that Muzzin probably should not have played in the 1st game. "Probably should have bag skated a couple more days there."
