But the problem at that time (and still now) is that the NHL is a niche sport in the large American sports landscape and the Kings are probably not even a top 20 product by revenue in the LA market. Further, the location of the franchise in Anaheim (and many other post 90's expansion markets) had nothing to do about filling a compelling need for professional ice hockey in a community. Instead there were billion$ of other reasons the owners pushed to expand.
So now you build all these stadiums and load up these new franchises with huge operating expenses, and they have crap for local and national TV dollars. So, they need to fill these arenas every night and the corporate geniuses decide to expand hockey from its' traditional market to a more family oriented product. So you see them start putting in ridiculous things like the puck trail on Fox. You see Tinkerbell touching a Ducks player with a wand when they score a goal. The arena music (and even the friggin' national anthem) starts to become advertising for Radio Disney stars and get progressively louder. And we get to the point today where going to a Kings hockey game in Staples center is just like going to any other major sporting events. The music is the same, the audience pranks are the same, teenagers shoot t-shirts made by slave labor into the crowd to generate false enthusiam. Long after Disney has exited the NHL, the product has continued to devolve into mass entertainment and the price a fan pays to access the product has risen both at the gate and on my satellite TV bill, with no appreciable increase in the quality of the core product itself (as witnessed by the incessant tweaks to game rules in order to increase scoring).
As a Kings fan for almost 20 years I feel like I'm living in a semi-fugue state with this franchise I have spent way too much time on (and money) over the years (not that I'd do anything different). On one hand, the on ice talent and the management team in charge of it are the best this franchise has ever had in its' history. I have witnessed them win a Cup, which I honestly thought would never happen. But at the same time, every time I go to Staples, I feel like most of the people there could give less than 2 craps about the team. And I've had this feeling for a few years now, where I almost enjoy watching at home more than making the trip down to Fig & Olympic. Maybe I'm just grumpy and getting older, but I feel like for the average fan, hockey felt more special before the ducks. Because now we are left with a niche sport that is packaged and sold in a way that has nothing to do with what made it special in the first place.
