A player with a professional contract is always said to be "assigned to the AHL" as in they're being loaned by the NHL club to an AHL team. By agreeing with the Monarchs directly he avoided having to be "assigned" by the Kings to Manchester because he's now in a playing agreement with Manchester itself and not the Kings. So once (if) the season starts the Kings would need to sign Dwight King to a contract with them since he's technically a property of the Manchester Monarchs now and not officially a Los Angeles Kings player.

I believe baseball has something similar when they talk about players having their minor league contracts purchased by a professional level team.

Exactly, he got a 1-way deal for $750,000, so I feel like there's still confussion as to how this has gone down.

I wonder if its like him signing in Europe. Once the lockout ends he can not play for Manchester. Unless the Kings put him on wavers. This is just something most players would not do I bet.

Thanks for correcting that for me. I thought he had, but with this AHL signing it confused me. I have to wonder how this was done and if other NHL players and teams will do this.

I think if it is one thing that he does have is the hands. Two seasons away from being a solid 16-18 minute a night LWer that screens on the top PP IF he continues to improve....in my opinion.

I have no idea. If you interpreted my comment as criticism of European hockey, you misinterpreted it. I was only saying that, in my opinion, "playing within the organization" is preferable to the alternative.
