Facts on the Fly: 2/23/2013 Colorado Avalanche @ Los Angeles Kings
(Brought to you by Rawley19)
Season series: This is the second of three meetings between the Avalanche and the Kings this season. Colorado won 3-1 on Jan. 22 at the Pepsi Center. Gabriel Landeskog and David Jones scored in the third period as the Avalanche won their home opener.
Big story: Landeskog is expected to return to Colorado's lineup on Saturday as the Avalanche look for their third straight win. The Kings return home after sweeping two games in Alberta and will play at Staples Center for just the fifth time this season.
Team Scope:
Avalanche: Colorado opens a three-game California trip with the good news that Landeskog should return to the lineup. The 20-year-old captain missed 11 games due to head and leg injuries sustained on Jan. 26 in a game at San Jose. He practiced on a line with Jones and Paul Stastny on Friday.
"I'm finally back," Landeskog said. "It feels good. [Friday] was the first [full] practice with the guys. Finally I get out of that pumpkin [orange non-contact] jersey. I haven't been out this long in a few years, so I'm extremely excited to get back."
The Avalanche have won two close games already this week, though in completely opposite ways. On Monday they knocked off the Nashville Predators 6-5; two nights later they edged the Blues 1-0 in overtime. Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and Jones scored with 16.4 seconds left in OT.
Kings: The Kings have won four of their last five, including back-to-back 3-1 wins at Edmonton and Calgary this week that capped a stretch in which they played eight of nine games away from home.
"Now that we're a good portion into the season, most of the League has their legs under them and I'm not sure it's as big of a grind as it would be in an 82-game schedule," said defenseman Rob Scuderi, who had a pair of assists on Wednesday night. "I think guys are fresh. Everybody realizes the importance of every single game now and that trumps the tired feeling in your legs."
After all that travel, the Kings will play 13 of their next 16 at Staples Center, where they are 2-1-1 this season.
Injury report: Landeskog flew to California and should play Saturday, but Erik Johnson (head) and Ryan Wilson (leg) remain out indefinitely. … The Kings are still without defensemen Matt Greene (back), Willie Mitchell (knee) and Alex Martinez (upper body).
Who's hot: Varlamov earned his second shutout of the season and the 10th of his career by stopping 33 shots on Wednesday. … Jeff Carter leads the Kings in goal scoring with eight, including one each in the two wins in Alberta.

Trevor Lewis (game recap): "The puck was bouncing so I had to wait for it to settle and I just fired it. I didn't see it go in, I thought actually (Mike) Richards touched it, so I didn't get as good of a celebration as I would have liked, but it still feels great to get the goose egg off. To get a chance to play with Richards or (Jeff) Carter, you pretty much just have to get them the puck and get open, and good things will happen."
Jeff Carter on whether he feels that things are beginning to come together: “Yeah, it’s a step in the right direction. I think we’ve worked hard to kind of round our game out. Obviously it wasn’t where we wanted to be. It’s still not where we want it to be, but we’re going in the right direction here. We’re getting comfortable with winning these close games again. Goalies are playing great.”
Drew Doughty on Jonathan Bernier’s performance: “He made some big saves the whole game. A lot of times when the puck was coming at the net, he was holding onto it. Those rebounds are usually where teams can capitalize, and he minimized those to the best of his ability. He was awesome tonight.”
Jeff Carter on whether the goaltenders’ performances have boosted the team’s confidence: “Absolutely. Both guys have been playing great for us. They’ve both been working hard, as everybody has, to kind of get their game rounded out. It’s not easy in the shortened season and whatnot. It’s good to see. It gives us a lot of confidence when we know that those guys are at the top of their game back there, so it’s been going well.”
Jonathan Bernier on his own rhythm after wins in three consecutive starts: “I think it’s all about the team. If you look at it, four wins out of five, and that’s what we wanted to be. Now we’ve just got to focus to be a home team. We have sa lot of games coming up at home, and we’ve got to find a way to be a strong team at home and find those wins.”
Darryl Sutter on whether he’s unhappy that Dwight King is yet to replicate last year’s production: “I think Dustin Penner, Dwight King, Simon Gagne, Brad Richardson – who else hasn’t scored a goal this year?…I’m not isolating Dwight King. We would have a little better record if one of them or all of them would have one more goal. We’re into 20-something percent of the games, now we’re almost into 33 percent of it. I don’t think that having no goals is beneficial to wondering where the player is. Playing up to his capabilities or not [is more important].”
Darryl Sutter on when he would consider sitting King for a “longer stretch”: “I don’t. Quite honest, it’s like you ask [about] Muzzin’s inconsistency, you want me to say he’s inconsistent. You want me to say ‘Dwight King, I should sit him out because he hasn’t scored.’ Guys that work play. Guys that don’t don’t.”
Anze Kopitar on the chemistry and the possession game with Dustin Brown and Justin Williams: “Yeah, we had a couple of rough games, if you pick out a few. Edmonton was not the best possession. Chicago was not the best possession. But in Calgary, I thought we managed the puck pretty well, especially through the neutral zone. That pretty much sets up offensive zone time, anyway, and once we were in the offensive zone we were able to make plays and get open and get some quality chances.”
Alec Martinez on his encouragement over the young defensemen inheriting his minutes: “For sure. They’re all really capable players. We’ve got a good hockey club and we’ve got a lot of depth. Over the course of the year stuff like this happens, and you need to be able to tap into that depth pool. I think that we are doing a good job now, and hopefully we can keep it going, especially into tomorrow.”
