Facts on the Fly: 2/27/2013 Detroit Red Wings @ Los Angeles Kings
(Brought to you by Rawley19)
Season series: Second of three meetings. If the initial matchup on Feb. 10 is any indication of what's in store, fans are in for a treat. Kings defenseman Alec Martinez knotted the score with 52.8 seconds left in regulation, but Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson answered by beating Jonathan Quick off a faceoff with 4.5 seconds remaining to give Detroit a 3-2 win at Joe Louis Arena.
Big story: This game is being nationally televised -- in the U.S. it's part of Wednesday Night Rivalry presented by Coors Light -- and for good reason. The defending champion Kings seem to have shaken free from their Stanley Cup hangover and have won four in a row, while the streaky Red Wings are on fire again, having taken two straight and scored 12 goals in the process.
Team Scope:
Red Wings: A pair of first-year Detroit forwards combined to overwhelm Vancouver over the final two periods Sunday, as the Red Wings scored six unanswered goals to blitz the Canucks, 8-3. Damien Brunner, at 26 too old to be classified as a rookie, scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season, while true rookie Joakim Andersson picked up the second and third goals of his young career in a 52-second span of the third to cap the offensive outburst. Brunner finished with a four-point game.
"It was good to see the puck go in," Henrik Zetterberg, who scored a goal and had two assists, all in the middle period, told the Detroit Free Press. "We've been struggling a little bit and I think we've been doing good stuff in the end, but haven't really gotten the reward. We got it today."
Kings: The recent surge lifted Los Angeles all the way up to seventh in the Western Conference and second in the Pacific Division heading into Tuesday night's action, and the latest win came against the hottest team in the West residing outside of Chicago. Dustin Penner and Dustin Brown rallied the Kings from one-goal deficits in the second period and Slava Voynov sparked a three-goal third with the game-winner as they toppled the Ducks 5-2 on Monday and dealt Viktor Fasth his first NHL loss after eight consecutive victories.
"It's big to win it without going into overtime. We wanted those two points. In a division game it's almost like four," said Penner, whose goal was his first this season.
Injury report: Detroit defenseman Kyle Quincey (ankle) is day-to-day. Forward Mikael Samuelsson (broken finger) is expected to miss at least another week. Defensemen Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder) and Brendan Smith (shoulder) and forwards Darren Helm (back), Todd Bertuzzi (back) and Johan Franzen (hip) are on injured reserve. … Martinez (upper body) has joined fellow defensemen Willie Mitchell (knee) and Matt Greene (back) on injured reserve for Los Angeles.
Who's hot: Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall has back-to-back three-point games, totaling one goal and five assists. Daniel Cleary has four goals in as many games. … Jeff Carter has goals in four straight games for the Kings. Brown has goals in three in a row. Anze Kopitar has a goal and five assists during a three-game points streak.

Drew Doughty (game recap): "That whole third period was ours. The crowd was going nuts and we had all the momentum."
Jake Muzzin on how he scored a power play goal: “I just beat him, man. Good power play. We’ve been working on our little routes there. Kopi made a nice bump pass to me in the middle, and I faked pass and shot it and just beat him glove.”
Jonathan Quick on what led to the victory: “We outworked them in the third, I think. Who knows. They played last night against Colorado, so maybe that played a factor in [it]. The first two periods were heavy. They were very physical. They had a lot of pace. When you’re playing back to back, sometimes it’s tough to play that style of game for 60 minutes. We were a little more fresh, I think, coming on a recovery day yesterday. We won the 20 minutes at the end, and that was what it took to win the game.”
Darryl Sutter on any team winning on any given night: “That’s what the salary cap did, right? It made everybody equal. That’s why you’ve had seven different champions. Teams that make it, teams that don’t make it. [There’s] clear parity in the league. It used to be top guys, bottom guys…Now everybody’s the same. Really, when there’s no out of conference play, [there are] 15 teams, right? So the three teams that had great starts are teams that are 15 points ahead of everybody.”
Dustin Brown on the improvements in the team’s overall game: “I think we’re definitely playing better hockey, both individually and collectively. We’re starting to score more goals, and that’s the result of ultimately playing better defense. Last night I thought we were really good in the defensive zone. A lot of their chances came on the power play, which is something we need to shore up on the PK. I thought we limited their time and space, especially their key guys.”
Dustin Brown on the play of the defensive corps despite absences on the blue line: “I think with Keats coming in and Muzz, I think they’re getting more comfortable. Especially Muzz being a younger guy with not a lot of NHL experience, he’s starting to I think get a little more comfortable in the system and how we play the game. The others – Scuds, Slava and Dewey – are staples of the back end, regardless.”
Dean Lombardi on the Simon Gagne trade: “I think there were just a number of things. Obviously you have a veteran player whose game is clearly defined and is a very good player. [He] wasn’t fitting in, so to speak. That said, this is an NHL player that’s proven to play on a good team, so you don’t do this unless you feel fairly comfortable in what you have coming through the minors. It’s not the same thing, but it’s similar like when you move Jack Johnson for Carter. Well, you don’t do that unless [you have] Voynov coming through. We feel pretty good about our depth up front in the system, so that opens up a roster spot.”
Darryl Sutter on if the chemistry is continuing to develop on the Kopitar line: “I think Willie [has been better]. I think Brownie’s still got some straight line work to do and make the line a little more where they join the dots a little better. I think Willie did most of the work last night in terms of going to the net and creating everything. Even on the goal that Brown scored, that’s a nice shot. That’s a highlight, right? But the play was made by [Williams] taking a hit to get around Getzlaf.”
