Facts on the Fly: 2/20/2013 Los Angeles Kings @ Calgary Flames
(Brought to you by Rawley19)
Season series: It's the first of three meetings this season, and the Kings' only trip to Calgary. The teams split four games in 2011-12, combining for only 11 non-shootout goals in the process.
Big story: The Kings wrap up a grueling stretch that has seen them play eight of their first nine games this month on the road by trying for an Alberta sweep after winning 3-1 in Edmonton on Tuesday. The Flames start a three-game homestand after a 4-0 loss at Phoenix on Monday.
Team Scope:
Kings: Los Angeles dominated play for most of the game in Edmonton but entered the final minute of regulation in a 1-1 tie. But with 49.6 seconds remaining, Jeff Carter deflected Trevor Lewis' shot past Nikolai Khabibulin to put L.A. ahead, and Jarrett Stoll added an empty-netter for a 3-1 victory that moved the Kings back to .500.
"Obviously we didn't want it to take that long," Carter said after the Kings outshot the Oilers 38-24. "It's just one of those games, Khabibulin was playing well. We were getting shots, but he was making saves. It's never easy in this building, but you have to stick with it for 60, 65 minutes, whatever it takes."
Flames: After a gutty 4-3 win in Dallas on Sunday in which they overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period, the Flames had very little in the tank Monday night in Phoenix. Calgary trailed only 1-0 after two periods but surrendered three goals in the final 20 minutes and left the desert with a dispiriting 4-0 loss.
"It was not a team effort," coach Bob Hartley said of his inconsistent team. "We had some guys that took the option on this game. They just didn't respond."
Injury report: The Kings are still thin on the blue line without Willie Mitchell (knee), Matt Greene (back) and Alec Martinez (upper body). … The Flames are still without starting goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff (lower body) and forwards Mikael Backlund (knee), Sven Baertschi (hip) and Paul Byron (hand).
Who's hot: L.A.'s Anze Kopitar has nine points in his last 11 games, a lot for a team that has struggled to score. Mike Richards has three goals in his last three games. … Curtis Glencross leads Calgary with six goals.

Jarret Stoll (game recap): "It was really nice to have it go the other way this time around. We came here for the two points and this time we got them. We stuck with it for all of the game and played the right way and deserved the win. Now we just have to get a string of wins together and become a bit more consistent overall."
Drew Doughty (game recap): "Quicky always makes some big saves for us. He was great. I think he made something like three breakaway saves, and that's huge. If those go in, it's a completely different game and we probably don't win it."
Darryl Sutter on whether this was the best Jonathan Quick has been early in a game: “Well, he was really good in Chicago, also, in the first period. The big thing is rebound control and getting faceoffs. That’s the biggest part of the game that he had to work on – rebounds, too much quality opportunities against. Hopefully that’s a step in the right direction…a step forward for him is winning games, finding ways to win games. So it’s not just about Jonathan Quick. It’s about us all. We’ve got to work around it.”
Darryl Sutter on the performance of Colin Fraser’s line: “Well, they didn’t play much, but they scored a big goal and they could have had two or three. We talked to them this morning about it. Jordan Nolan’s really struggling with parts of his game, and hopefully this gives him a little confidence.”
Jonathan Quick on Edmonton's speed: “Yeah, they’ve got a lot of guys that can skate. It’s fast ice, too. We’ve seen them a few times. We know they’ve got a lot of speed. They like to open it up. They’ve got a lot of guys that are very talented with the puck. I think we did a good job of shutting that down and making them play on the wall. We outplayed them on the wall tonight.”
Drew Doughty on playing with different defensive partners throughout the game: “I’m playing with a a lot of guys. They were kind of rotating me through Drewiske, Ellerby and Muzzin, and I like that. At the same time it’s good to have one partner that you’re used to playing with, but switching it up and trying to create some offense or having more of a solid D-pairing out there is a good thing.”
