Facts on the Fly: 2/5/2013 Los Angeles Kings @ Columbus Blue Jackets
(Brought to you by Rawley19)
Season series: This is the first of three meetings between the teams. They split their four meetings last season.
Big story: While the Blue Jackets have played two more games, no one thought they'd be ahead of the defending champions in the standings two-plus weeks into the season. The Kings rank in the bottom third of the League in goals per game, goals-allowed per game and power play, and they've killed off just 79.4 percent of penalties. This is the second game of a stretch for the Kings of eight of nine on the road.
Team Scope:
Kings: Jonathan Quick was an impregnable fortress between the pipes last season, but has been allowing goals early and often this season. He was pulled after giving up two goals on three shots in the Kings' 7-4 loss to the Ducks on Saturday and has an .897 save percentage in seven games.
Yanking Quick was something coach Darryl Sutter didn't want to do.
"We want our goalies to play better. They're not protected species, that's for sure," Sutter told reporters Sunday. Jonathan Bernier replaced Quick and allowed four goals on 21 shots. "Both of them have to play a hell of a lot better. They both want to be starting goalies, right? Our save percentage right now has to be a lot better."
Blue Jackets: After losing six of seven, Columbus broke through with a 4-2 home win against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Goalie Steve Mason made 32 saves, Artem Anisimov scored twice, and Jack Johnson played 34:59 after fellow defenseman James Wisniewski left early in the second period after crashing hard into the boards.
Anisimov, who was acquired in the Rick Nash trade this summer, now has four goals this season.
"I'm still learning Artie and his game," coach Todd Richards said. "Maybe as he starts to figure out his teammates and they figure him out, there may be a lot more there."
Injury report: The Kings will be without defensemen Matt Greene, who is out for the season with a back injury, and Willie Mitchell (knee). … For the Blue Jackets, defensemen Wisniewski and Nikita Nikitin are out. Right wing Cam Atkinson is out with a high ankle sprain.
Who's hot: Kings captain Dustin Brown has three goals in his past two games. … Anisimov’s four goals lead the team, and three have come in the past five games.

Justin Williams (game recap): "We've let ourselves down and shot ourselves in the foot by poor defensive play. For whatever reason, we've been having tough times starting games. We've been getting behind early and trying to battle back. Once we do get back, we seem to just relax a bit. We're a much better team than we're showing and it's extremely disappointing at this point to see where we are."
Dustin Brown (game recap): "We need them both going at the same time. That's been a staple of our game and probably an indication of the mistakes we were making. Giving up that many power play goals, for this team, is uncharacteristic. How you play on the PK generally correlates how you play five-on-five."
Drew Doughty on the penalty kill: “PK was not good [Saturday] night. We all know that. All of us that are on the PK, we feel responsible for that, and we’re not happy about it. So we’re going to definitely get back to that. Like you said, the PK has been a cornerstone of this franchise for every year I’ve been here, so for the last for or five years. We need to get back to that 90%, you know, letting maybe one in every 10 games or something like that. We’re not happy with that.”
Trevor Lewis on his line's forechecking: “I think that’s what our line needs to focus on that more. I think that’s what we were so good at in the playoffs. I think we were starting to do a better job at it, and you we just need to keep getting better as to where we were.”
Darryl Sutter on the team's Power Play the last 3 games: “It’s not much different than earlier in the year. Just, they finished. They finished the opportunities. I felt we wanted to get more from the points in terms of – not so much opportunities – but just creating or presenting different looks to the other teams, and Mike gives us that playing on the point. It’s not something we really wanted to do, but that’s what works best right now.”
