Facts on the Fly: 3/2/2013 Los Angeles Kings @ Vancouver Canucks
    (Brought to you by Rawley19)

Season series: This is the second of three meetings between the clubs this season. The Kings beat the Canucks in a shootout, 3-2, on Jan. 28 in Los Angeles. They also play March 23 in Los Angeles.

Big story: The Kings will try to build on their season-high five-game winning streak against the slumping Canucks, who have lost two straight and have just two wins in their past seven games. The Kings have allowed just six goals in their past five games.

    Team Scope:

Kings: For five games now the Kings have gotten back to playing the brand of hockey that led them to the Stanley Cup championship last season. Their goaltending has been fantastic and they are getting production from up and down the lineup.

L.A. has outscored the opposition by a combined 17-6 over the past five games and has gotten goals from nine different players. Jeff Carter has scored in all five games and Anze Kopitar has two goals and six assists for eight points in the five games. Mike Richards has assists in each of the past four games.

Jonathan Quick and Jonathan Bernier have combined for a 1.20 goals-against average and .955 save percentage.

"We're putting together a pretty good streak here, and we've got to keep it going," Kopitar said. "We know we had a bit of a slow start and we've got some catching up to do."

Canucks: Vancouver is coming off an 8-3 loss to Detroit on Wednesday. That came after a 4-2 loss to Phoenix.

Worse yet, the Canucks will now begin playing without center Ryan Kesler, who is out with a broken foot. Word is he played six games with the injury. Defenseman Kevin Bieksa has missed the past two games with a groin injury and is questionable for the game Saturday.

Cory Schneider is expected to get the start in goal for the second straight game. He was hard on himself following the 4-2 loss to Phoenix, saying he was sick and tired of playing like an average goalie.

"It's not as if I'm way off," Schneider told reporters after practice Friday. "It's one save a game and it's very doable. I'm very confident I can make that extra save."

Injury report: Kings defenseman Alec Martinez returned to the ice for a full team practice Friday for the first time since he last played Feb. 11. He said he's ready to go, but called it a coach's decision. Similarly, Bieksa practice Friday for the first time since he left the game against Nashville on Feb. 22 with a groin injury. He's listed as day-to-day. Kesler is definitely out for the Canucks.

Who's hot: Carter has goals in five straight games and Kopitar has strung together three consecutive multi-point games. As for his goalie, Kings coach Darryl Sutter can choose from the red-hot Bernier (.958 save percentage in his last four starts) or Quick (3-0 with a 1.33 GAA in his last three starts).

Darryl Sutter (game recap): "We thought we deserved better in Detroit, so maybe it all comes down to the hockey god, right? I don't think we had much in the tank, to be honest. The goaltender was the difference in the game."

Anze Kopitar on his game-winning goal: “It was a little bit of a scrum on the half wall there. I just wanted to make sure I got loose just in case those guys got the puck. Coming our way, I wanted to make sure I was in a decent position to come back. Then, once I saw Kinger get the puck, I just kind of opened up. I knew I was by myself in front of the goalie, and I was able to put it in.”

Drew Doughty on any concern of averaging over 26 and a half minutes of ice time in a compacted season: “No, I enjoy it. Definitely, you’re more tired after games and in-between games, but I’d way rather play every other day than have three or four days of practice. Not that practice sucks or anything like that, but it’s just way more fun being out there in front of fans and playing in a realistic game. I love those minutes, like I said, and I hope I can continue to perform at my best at them.”

Anze Kopitar on Jonathan Bernier’s performance: “I don’t know if there’s much to say. You guys saw it out there. He kept us in [it] in the first. He was making some big saves. That goal was a little bit of a fluke, but he was making the saves he was supposed to, and that’s all you really want from your goaltender.”

Drew Doughty on whether the experience from winning a Cup helps in tense third period situations: “Yeah, I think so. We learned a lot from that Cup run. We experienced some things that you don’t experience throughout the regular season, and I think we can definitely use that to our advantage. We were in those tough spots when we needed goals late, or wherever it may be, and I think going on in the season, it’s going to kind of be more playoff style hockey, and that’s what I think all of us in here really relish.”

Darryl Sutter on the play along the boards by Trevor Lewis and Dwight King to set up Anze Kopitar’s goal: “Kinger and Lewis are good on the walls. That’s why, quite honest, it was the biggest problem we had tonight was that our wingers weren’t very good on the walls, and I was just trying to find three sets of wingers that would give us that in the third and got lucky.”

Justin Williams on given Vancouver’s recent play, the lapse in their schedule, and the general rivalry, whether the performance in the first 10 minutes of the game will be more important than usual: “I wouldn’t think so. I just think we’ve developed quite a rivalry playing them two out of the last three years in the playoffs. We don’t like them. They don’t like us. It’s certainly no secret. We were able to win one early this year…and we want to keep our streak going, and they want to I think maybe get on track. They’ve had some time off to think about it, prepare for us, but the first 10 minutes in the opponents’ building is always important, especially when you’re playing in Canada.”

Alec Martinez on whether there were any difficulties or hesitations: “I feel good. I can shoot the puck. I’ve tested it out. I’ve thrown myself into the glass a few times, and we had a little bit of battling on the two-one-ones, and it felt good. Every day I’ve noticed a big difference, so today it’s even better than it was two days ago.”
