Facts on the Fly: 1/31/2013 Nashville Predators @ Los Angeles Kings
(Brought to you by Rawley19)
Season series: First of three meetings. Los Angeles took three of four from Nashville during its Stanley Cup championship season. Patric Hornqvist of the Predators led all scorers with four goals, while the Kings got at least one goal from 12 different players.
Big story: While the focus during the initial days of the season was on the Kings' potential Cup hangover, the Predators enter Thursday's action as the team desperately in need of two points as they continue on a lengthy road trip that has seen them win just once in four stops.
Team Scope:
Predators: Balanced scoring is what Nashville likely will have to rely on to break this slump, especially with Patric Hornqvist out of the lineup for the immediate future. That shouldn't be a problem -- the Predators had 10 players score at least 10 goals last season. But no one is putting the puck in the net with any consistency at the moment, as the team has been shut out in two of the last three games. Captain Shea Weber, in the first year of his mega-deal after putting up 19 goals and 49 points last season, hasn't registered a single point yet.
"I think Webs is a little bit frustrated," coach Barry Trotz said in the Tennessean. "He wants to do so well. It's not that he's doing a lot of bad things, but I think there's a little bit of a level of frustration in his game right now that holds him back a little bit."
Kings: Occasionally forgotten after the juggernaut it resembled during the playoffs is that Los Angeles had to scratch and claw just to make it into the Western Conference's top eight last season, and it's possible 2012-13 will feature more of the same for these Kings. They showed the requisite pluck in Monday's 3-2 shootout win over the Canucks, rallying from two goals down to tie on Slava Voynov's goal with 43 seconds left in regulation and prevailing on Jeff Carter's tally in the tiebreaker.
"We're still not the way we were in June last year, but we're getting there," said Anze Kopitar, who had an assist on Voynov's goal. "It's definitely a step in the right direction. We still have to work on things, and everyone in here thinks we can crank it up a notch. We just want to make sure we build on this win and roll ahead."
Injury report: Hornqvist (knee) is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. … Los Angeles defenseman Matt Greene (back) is unlikely to return during the regular season, while defenseman Willie Mitchell (knee) is out indefinitely.
Who's hot: In addition to his shootout winner, Carter also scored the first goal for the Kings in regulation on Monday, and he has now tallied in three straight. Jonathan Quick is 2-0-1 in his last three starts and hasn't given up more than two goals in any of them.

Jonathan Quick (game recap): “Anytime you get two points it’s a boost of confidence and I think it’s only good for tonight, you get two days in between games now and we got to use our time properly to be able to take the momentum to Thursday night so depending on how we handle the next two days, maybe we’ll carry it over if we do it well.”
Anze Kopitar (game recap): “It feels good to get it on home ice, we all know how the first game went and we wanted to come back strong . We had some chances even in the first but everything was from the outside really and in the second half of the second period we started penetrating a little bit and got into a tough area if that’s what you want to call it and it paid off.”
Darryl Sutter (game recap): “You play resilient. You’ve got to win games like that. We only had three penalties tonight which is in the right direction. Its got to be a three or four penalty game to be successful in this league. I didn’t like Brown’s call for sure. I thought [Drewiske] was pretty solid tonight, and I thought [Muzzin] had a tough start, and it’s going to be an adjustment for him.”
Simon Gagne on his surgery and recovery: “Right after surgery, not having that thing in my neck, the first thing I noticed was the way I was sleeping. Waking up in the morning feeling a lot better and more rested. Able to sleep on my back, like normal. It was a big difference. I don’t know if it is going to help in hockey, but in every day life, it’s definitely something that has helped a lot. I had a lot of injections to help the pain and they said maybe those injections caused (the mass) to grow. At least now, it’s out of (my neck) and now it’s back to normal.”
Darryl Sutter on Willie Mitchell's recovery: “We are trying to do as much off-ice as we can to get (Willie’s) fitness where it can be, and hopefully he can jump back into practice again. There has been zero setback.”
Darryl Sutter on when Dustin Penner will get back into the lineup: “I really don’t have a timeline. I watch how he practices. See his pace, and what we are trying to execute and then work on getting him in. It’s no different than what we did with Gagne. If we break it down by position, there is a 1-through-5 position in terms of how they are performing. At every position, some guys are moving up; some guys are moving down. That’s the way it works.”
Dustin Brown on Darryl Sutter's line juggling Monday Night in the 3rd period: “We were definitely aware of it. You are used to playing with certain guys. But we are all pulling for the same thing, and that is tying that game. (Darryl) was mixing and matching players. You are just waiting for your number to be called and focusing on what you need to do.”
