i'm not sure where you get that gary bettman thinks more power plays equates to more goals (although that's obvious to anyone), or that there is a directive to refs to call more penalties, but, if that's the case...
-it doesn't bode well for the kings and their poor power play
-over-calling penalties (like last night's game) will not last long. when the nfl implemented its new set of penalties and enforcement last season, the penalty-calling was top-heavy, meaning that most of those penalties were called early-on, in order to make it clear that <this> type of behaviour will not be tolerated, and fines/suspensions were imposed to players. now players have made the adjustments in how they hit each other and the new penalty calls are just part of the game.
Really felt for Quick last night. He played very well and had his heart on his sleeve. Did anyone see his reaction when Yakapov scored? Dude was devastated.
I wasn't happy with him after the 'Hawk game but he has very much been the #1A to Clifford's #1 status in the early going. Quick is a true professional.
As I do agree that Quick is getting better with each game, he still looks rusty however. He appears to be over-committing when moving side to side, so much to the point that it takes him out of the play completely. It happened in the Colorado game a few times. We know he's usually able to recover due to his athleticism, which was clear on the outstretched glove save on Yakupov earlier in the game. But his movement appeared more desperate and less controlled as the clock was ticking down. He over-committed on the tying goal and the disallowed tying goal - yeah he was run into by an Oiler - but he was also way off to the side. The over-committing shows me that Quick isn't his usual calm self. He's been losing his cool more too, complaining and talking to the refs (and i'm not just referring to the discussion re: the disallowed goal). He'll get back to his normal self, but the team will need him to regain his composure because the top forwards aren't giving him any help.
Why was my thread with my thoughts moved into the "Oh No the sky is falling" thread?
It was no different than this.
Not that this matter now, but with regards to the disallowed goal, should it not have been, by extension, a penalty to Gagne for goaltender interference? Shouldn't an infraction egregious enough to negate a goal also be called a penalty? Once again, officiating in the NHL has left me dazed and confused
