With the 48 game season, teams are already scrambling to get points. I'm not worried yet, but the Kings need to start putting some W's up on the sheet. How many points do you think it will take for a team to get in at the number 8 playoff spot?

If my math is right and 94 is the magic number with 82 games, then it looks like 55 points for 48 games...
95.
All kidding aside. I say 55.
It is still too early to worry. I still say give it another half a week before most if not all of the NHL teams get their game face on. This only helps teams like the Oilers that had their core guys working together in the AHL. I could see them sneaking into the playoffs. I see the Kings going savage in about a week after a so-so start then winning the division or making it as a #5 seed.
Figure in a 82 game season there are 164 possible points. The Kings were in 8th last year with 95 points, or roughly 58 percent of the total points available. This year there are 48 games, so 96 possible points. 58 percent of 96 points is approximately 56 points.
So my guess is the 8th seed will be right around 56 points on the year.
I'm probably wrong but I have a feeling the points will be more on the 60-65 side since all the games are conference games only... and you know how many 3 point games there are every freaking time.

55 - 56 if you go with 95 - 96 in a full season is dictated by simple math. As badly as many of the teams are starting out with players unready to play, it may be 1 or 2 points lower.
In the seven seasons from 05/06 through 11/12, it took an average of 92 points to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference and 94.29 points in the Western Conference (overall average of 93.14). Converting those numbers to a 48 game schedule gives you somewhere between 53-55 points (53.85, 55.19, and 54.52 respectively).
For what it's worth, in 1994-95, the #8 seed in the East finished with 47 points, and the #8 seed in the West finished with 42 points, but that's obviously not a good guide because the extra points available under the current rules.
