    Default How slow-skating are The Kings, really?

    I am trying to get a handle on how good/bad our overall team skating speed actually is.

    I've heard some negative comments about it in recent weeks, although
    not so much in recent days, due to our winning & all.

    This is how I rate out overall team speed. I think I'm in the ballpark in most cases.
    I just don't know how we actually match-up against other teams.

    BA=below avg speed
    A=average speed
    AA=above average speed
    WAA-way above average speed

    Fws
    Kopitar-AA
    JWilliams-AA
    Browne-A
    Carter-AA
    Toffoli-A
    Richards-A
    King-BA
    Stoll-A
    Lewis-WAA
    Clifford-BA
    Nolan-BA
    Frattin-AA
    Carcillo-A? AA?
    Vey-AA
    Fraser-A? BA?
    Pearson-AA

    D-Men
    Doughty-AA
    Voynov-WAA
    Martinez-AA
    Muzzin-A
    Mitchell-BA
    Regehr-BA
    Greene-BA

    That's a decent number of "AA" players, although not too many "WAA" guys.

    And having Vey and Pearson out there makes us significantly faster (and more skilled) than
    Fraser and Clifford in the same slots.

    Do most other NHL teams really have a faster squad than that?

    I would think The Kings are somewhere in the middle of the League, speed wise, albeit "lower middle".

    But I could be wrong.

    I am not sure overall team speed is a requirement for success. I think the Kings have a very good balance of speed, and it is highly conducive for the system they operate. Cycling, possession time in the o-zone, wearing out the opposition, all those aspects the Kings have been building up, does not require speed skaters. Balance of size, skill, strength, and hockey IQ trumps speed. For example, Edmonton Oilers.

    You bring up a good point, when you are a team built on puck possession, cycling, board work, and wearing down the other team- speed isnt as much as a factor for teams that play a wide open run and gun style.

    So Brown and Stoll are just average and Kopitar is AA? Not. Also, Richards is BA.

    The King's identity is a heavy, physical, hard-hitting team. To achieve that identity the tradeoff is team speed. Upgrading in speed without losing size or skill is possible i.e. Dwight King and Jordan Nolan in for Ethan Moreau and Trent Hunter, but very difficult.
