The point here (I think) is that the Kings overall roster of players is good enough where we can let go a former 1st round pick. There was just not enough room in the line-up. At the time of the pick the Kings needed defense so taking a forward then was really the thing to do. They could have had Alzner I guess but that just goes back to the "crap shoot" of the draft. I'd still like to hear what DL thinks about Hickey and his development and how that might have been de-railed (if at all).
Whatever the case, it isn't like this is unique. I'm pretty sure ALL of the even the better GM's have made similar mistakes (assuming Hickey doesn't end up with an NHL career).

Good luck to the kid. Glad it wasn't Detroit or New Jersey that got him. I'm okay with the Isles. I like them. He should get lots of quality ice time with them. Might even have a nice career with them.
