Is there a daily updated website that lists all players currently on waivers?

This is what happens when you have organizational depth. It sucks, and I'm actually in the "Hickey will be something" camp. But Doughty/Martinez/Voynov aren't exactly over the hill, and between the draft, free agency, trade, and current prospects... I find it hard to believe that this move comes back to bite us.
    Very good point.

What needs to be remembered is that Lombardi wanted to build from the back end. His first priority was a puck moving defenseman. He didn't know that he was going to end up with Doughty in the next draft. Doughty filled the need.

What I don't understand is why they wouldn't keep him for Manchester. Why just give him away? He is still a young developing player who may well be a serviceable NHL defensman for years to come. Are we really that deep?

It seems the organization was trying to keep him. Due to his service time as a pro, he needs to pass through waivers before being assigned to the AHL. At that point, he was available to every team in the league. So there was no other way to hang onto him other than keep him on the big club.

So wait was everyone on ahl rosters with enough pro time forced to go on waivers or be called up? I just thought that list would have been longer for all teams

I would argue that blowing a top 5 pick at any point usually really hurts a franchise. I'm just glad that in the Kings case it did not, and that we can have this discussion in the afterglow of a Stanley Cup win.
The pick of Hickey at #4 obviously didn't hurt the franchise in anay meaningful way since we won the Cup. That draft class was not really strong at the top other than Kane so it's not like Lombardi missed out on a star. Hickey is still young and developing and can't really be considered a bust. He's never going top be the puck mover that Lombardi was going for because he changed his style to be more responsible defensively. He may very have a decent NHL career.

Cloutier on the other hand was just a disaster all around, from the trade itself, to his ridiculously horrible play, and the uber ridiculous contract extension.

IMO there is no contest here.

Wasn't he already assigned to the AHL?

In Manchester. Clune and Hickey didn't take up playing spots on the NHL roster.
