Default I've Figured Out The Championship Magic Formula (it wasn't really a secret)

Fox just replayed the 1993 Campbell Conference Game 7. Incredible game. Amazing back and forth action in the third.

This was about when I started watching, although at the time I wasn't totally plugged in to who Dave Taylor, Luc Robitaille, Felix Potvin, Rob Blake and Marty McSorley were yet. Amazing to see that team all back on the ice together all these years later after the last three seasons. Really makes me wonder why the Blake hate persists, but whatever. Old grudges die hard. It's a vivid reminder that Luc and Blake and DT all share roots deep in this teams traditions. Anyways ...

Kings Win, Melrose hugs Gretzky who just had his whatever playoff Hat Trick.

Fox cuts to the locker room and pretty much everyone is making love with the Campbell Conference trophy. Uh-oh. Champagne, fondling, etc.

    Cut to 2012:

    2014:

    Final scientific analysis:

Clearly, no matter how futile and pathetic the organizations recent history is, you DO NOT celebrate the conference championship.

The Hockey Gods have spoken. And we finally speak the language.

p.s., Hrudey in that game makes me want to wear a headband. Funny that was the beginning of the Potvin era that would give us dashes of hope later.

Yeah - I've seen that too...the Kings are so freaking happy (I love Luc in his accent) - Trophy superstition? NAH!
I think that not touching the trophy thing has really been pronounced the last 10-15 years. Can't recall any Captain touching, hoisting, etc. the Conference Trophy since the '90s.
Could be wrong...but like playoff beards...Dustin Penner vs. Zach Parese in 2012 {for example} are a choice...which tends to turn into a steadfast superstition.

    Bandwagon fan, boooooooooooooooooooo!

Nope, I have absolutely no problem with that, it's a slight at people putting way too much importance into the act of bandwagoning.

PS: Interesting observation and although I'm not really superstitious I, personally, would definitely NOT celebrate conference trophy.

But I thought the team picture showed the Rangers had better locker room camaraderie, per Martin Biron on NHL Network?

Forget superstition, the reason you don't celebrate is because mentally you need to observe that you are not done what you set out to do. Who gives a sh@t about a conference championship? Before these cups, whenever people made fun of my favourite team, I don't ever recall saying "well, we were conference champs in 93." (except Leafs fans… I probably said that to Leafs fans many times) Anyway, you celebrate when your goal is accomplished not 3/4 of the way through it.

There is no superstition because that thing about not touching the Campbell didn't really exist back in '93. All this shows is the attitude of the two teams, and their abilities to stay calm and focused until the 16'th win is completed. To me the difference between the '93 team and the 2014 team is that this year's squad could have got over the McSroley's stick loss, where the '93 team clearly let the incident get to them because they all wore their emotions to close to their sleeves.

It showed they were happy and possibly surprised to be there… much like the Kings in 93.

Yep, the whole "don't touch the conference trophy" superstition is pretty new, probably showed up in the last 10 years or so. Before that, both Cup Final teams would touch it, hug it, kiss it, etc. after winning the last Conference Final game.

In 2009, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was happy to grab the Prince of Wales trophy when Pittsburgh clinched the Eastern Conference title. This came one year after the Penguins opted to adhere to superstition and not touch the trophy -- then subsequently lost to the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Pittsburgh won the 2009 Stanley Cup, proving maybe it isn't so unlucky to touch a conference trophy after all.
