Thread: Just interesting...(to me anyway)

So I was reading the threads and seeing the displeasure of the play of Drew Doughty and wondered "what if" we had gotten the #1 pick in 2008 and took Stamkos instead of Doughty. We all know that to have a successful team you probably should build from the net out, like was done with LA. It was said back then by Dean I believe, or Lieweke that they would have taken Doughty #1, had they gotten that pick.

So here is the thing that interested me....

Since that draft, the Kings are 180-131-43...1 missed playoffs, 2 first round exits, 1 Stanley Cup and probably a 4th play run this year....

Tampa Bay (mostly offense, not good on defense) 153-152-50....3 missed playoffs, probably a 4th this year and 1 EC final...

So you wonder if indeed Deano and the Kings would have taken Doughty anyway had they indeed gotten the #1 pick.

you have to look at ownership issues with Tampa and the fact that Yzerman has been at the helm for just under 3 years.

Dean went out and signed Scuderi and Mitchell, and traded Lubo and his cookies for Stoll and Greene. That solidified the back-end, but those same quality defensemen have not really been available the past couple of off-seasons. Suter is the only one that really comes to mind for me as a high-quality free agent defenseman that has been available and he was signed at an outrageous price.

In my opinion, Mitchell has been the Kings #1 defenseman and the Kings sorely miss him.

Things would have played out differently, but I do think the Kings could have had equal success with Stamkos or even Pieterangelo instead of Doughty.

As was pointed out, there's a lot more factors in play contributing to the Kings' success and Tampa Bay's lack thereof than just one player. I think the Kings would have been just fine with Stamkos and TB would have still not been very good with Doughty.

If only it were that simple.
