Muzzins been good. are we watching the same games?

Muzzin has not been good. He can't handle the puck, he makes errant passes, he gets beat way too easily in his own zone, and he doesn't use his size to his advantage at all. Sutter doesn't trust him for more than 11-13 minutes per game, and he even singled Muzzin out by name. Muzzin was scratched today, and his replacement (Ellerby) played 18 minutes. Ellerby was also far better than Muzzin has been the entire season.
Who's arguing? Some people are just voicing why they like the deal. And what's wrong with some refreshing honesty about people who are excited for a player joining the team, fringe or otherwise?
Of course, in hindsight, there are players taken after Hickey and Ellerby who would have been much better picks... but bringing that up is even more pointless.
I agree that if Ellerby could have fetched more, he would have. However, I think that there are different ways in looking at the market of available players and what the asking prices are. Teams either want a surefire NHL ready defenseman or a journeyman they can stuff in the minors to develop. Ellerby is a journeyman who can't be stuffed in the minors, lest the player be subject to waivers. His situation isn't desirable for most teams to look for. I think that definitely had an impact on his value.
I do disagree with the notion that trading a player due to a numbers game is different than losing a player to waivers in a numbers game. They are both lost because of a numbers game. When it's a fifth round pick, the difference between the trade and waivers is negligible.
Either way, I liked what I saw in his first game. If he can play a decent 18 minutes a game as Doughty's partner, that's much better than anything we could expect from a 5th rounder.
Theres people that think Muzzin has been good? lol
Not saying he wouldnt be considered a bust but some, but he should have been the pick. I would prefer taking a chance on the longshot with a pick lower than 4 overall. Alzner has played 227 games in the NHL, which is sunstantially more than Hickey's 7.
Just went back and read Alzner's predraft scouting report and in a nutshell, says he is a classic stay at home defenseman. Which, with the loss of Greene and Mitchell, is exactly what the Kings could use.
Dont get me wrong, I recognize 100% what a crapshoot the draft is, and Deano was spot on with his drafting of King, Martinez and Simmonds that year. With Lombardi's emphasis on D, it still amazes me that Alzner wasnt the pick.
Agree that Alzner would have been a better pick than Hickey. I was going to qualify that with "in hindsight," but no - this is one case where it seems the rest of the hockey intelligence community (I should copyright that) knew better than Dean. It happens.
I was just pointing out that Alzner would not have been a great pick at number 4, and I do think Lombardi knew that much.
Why he chose Hickey is more puzzling to me now than it was at the time. I can understand favoring a mobile defenseman with elite skills over a safe, stay at home type - the stay at home is easier to acquire in other ways. (Scuderi, Mitchell, Greene, Ellerby by trade or FA; Doughty, Voynov, Martinez by draft) But Hickey was never that player. He was basically the same player as Alzner, but smaller - good character, stay at home, nothing that stands out in his game.
Still, I'm just not able to say that Alzner "should have been the pick" as you do. I don't swear on the gospel of "best player available," but in this case I think the right move might have been to accept that there was no defense prospect on the board good enough to build a team around and just take the value at forward, no matter how badly they wanted to build from the net out.
If I recall, Hickey was viewed as a potential PP quarterback and was drafted primarliy for his skating ability. I did not think he was viewed as a stay at home defenceman. While I have the Center Ice package, I have not watched many Caps games so cant comment on exactly how good Alzner has been. Nor have I watched many Islanders games this year, so have no idea how Hickey is doing.
