Because they are doing one of the main things that wins games. They have just been a little unlucky.
First, what are the Kings doing right?
Getting the puck at the opponents goal. They are doing it more than their opposition. By one of the highest margins in the league. How do I know this? Because people (evil sorcerers known as statisticians) count shots. And compare them. And present them in the form of tables and graphs.

What this says: when the score is within 2 goals, the LAK get 57.77 percent of the shots. (that leaves only 42.33 for the opponent)
I'll take those odds!
And how do I know they are just unlucky?
Because those evil statisticians also try to measure things like luck. And they have noticed 2 areas where luck is a factor. Shooting percentage, and save percentage. Over hockey history, those numbers tend to cluster into a very tight range. Over the long term, teams tend toward the same percentages. And those percentages will generally add up to 1.000. They call that statistic PDO
(BULL****? that can't POSSIBLY be right. THEY JUST HAPPEN TO ADD UP TOWARD 1.000?!?)
But it is. The statisticians magic makes it so. Just accept.
So how have the kings done luck wise?
Near the bottom of the league.

Their shooting percentage is low, and so is their save percentage. Both should regress toward the average. (They will score more often on their shots, and they will save more of the shots against)
More goals for, fewer goals against = more wins.
Be at peace Kings fans, for the statistics are with us!
