Dollars to donuts, the column in the database table that stores the karma value is an INT (32 bit) when it should be a BIGINT (64 bit). 64 bit integers allow for a max value of 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. One would normally chose a 32 bit integer over a 64 bit integer in a database to save disk space. That could be a big savings if the table is likely to have millions of rows in it. Given that this value is only recorded once per user though, it saves LGK just under 19kb of disk space with its 4789 users. (4 bytes * 4789 users = 19156 bytes)
Whoever implemented the karma system probably didn't anticipate something like vBookie coming along to raise karma values so high, so quickly. They probably thought no one would ever go over 2 billion karma, and if someone did, it would be long after they'd quit the company. An excusable mistake, but still bad software design.
On the bright side, at least it's smart enough to not set you guys back to negative values. That can happen when integer overflow occurs on some systems.
this is the first morning since last Saturday I've been able to comprehend the general dynamics of walking to the kitchen and getting and coffee, making to my office and sitting up, And Turning On the Computer,........ And you hit me with this?
