    KINGS SIGN DEFENSEMAN KURTIS MACDERMID

LOS ANGELES – The 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings have signed defenseman Kurtis MacDermid to a three-year entry level contract, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

MacDermid, 18, played last season with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack. In nine games he had two assists and seven penalty minutes.

The 6-3, 186-pound native of Sauble Beach, Ontario also played with the Owen Sound Greys of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (junior B level), recording nine points (3-6=9) and 80 penalty minutes in 20 games.

MacDermid participated at the Kings annual Development Camp in July.

The Kings signed an 18-year-old kid out of Jr. B? As in, tier 3 hockey, with the fat kids and stoners? There is no lower-level of junior hockey to be found in most of Canada. What possible logic could there be for an NHL team to sign a teenager from such a low level of hockey?

Maybe he's a fixer-upper project to fill out the Reign roster?

Hammond says he's going to Owen Sound of the OHL...isn't this typical of a player who didn't get drafted and then ends up in the OHL?

He went to the Kings camp and proved himself. With the politics of Junior Hockey, and most youth hockey in general, it is extremely rational to think a kid slipped through and became a late bloomer.

He is now playing in the OHL, so I think that says a TON about character as well. Having to play with "fat kids and stoners" and keeping his head and working hard enough to move up says something.

Give the kid a break and trust a staff that brought us the Cup.

This does seem to keep popping up to defeat my usual snarky pessimism, doesn't it?

Kings won the Stanley Cup... If DL wants to sign a player who has a slightly better chance than me to reach the NHL, I'm ok with it.

Maybe this kid will do something and surprise us all. Maybe he'll end up being filler for Manchester. Either way I've got a strange and unsettling amount of trust for Lombardi right now.
