Default Kings v Blues '96 on NHL network right now

Wow. Watching this makes me really appreciate how far we've come. Kristich, Broten, Olcyk, Bylsma. Those were dark days, friends.

This would probably have made the Top 10 Kings games before 2012

Is that the Brett Hull game, where he scored the hat trick his 500th goal, and the OT game winner?

If so, I've lived through that ***** once before...

The Kings sure were a deep hockey squad back when Sam "The Disaster" McMaster was GM. This is the lineup the Kings iced in that game:

    Olczyk-Khristich-Yachmenev
    Tsyplakov-Ferraro-Smyth
    Stevens-Broten-Nurminen
    Potomski-Laperriere-Bylsma

    Zmolek-Blake
    Norstrom-Boucher
    O'Donnell-Modry

    Fiset-Dafoe

You can find the game on YouTube, broken down into three parts by each period:

Surprising that the Kings couldn't finish up in last place and end up with the 1st pick. They ended up selecting 3rd that year after the Bruins selected Joe Thornton first and the Sharks selected Patrick Marleau second. Lot of publications felt that Roberto Luongo should've gone third, but I guess at the time the Kings were still quite high on Fiset and Storr (whoops). Imagine how history would've changed had the Kings selected Luongo over Jokinen.

And with the second 1st round selection that the Kings obtained from the Blues in the Gretzky trade was wasted away on Matt Zultek, who was one of three players selected in the 1st round of the '97 draft to never appear in a single NHL game.

As an added bonus to this post, reading material from the LA Times covering the loss with some quotes from Lappy and Larry Robinson, whose best contribution as Kings coach were his quotes, and nothing else.
Kings Have No Cure For Their Own Blues - Los Angeles Times

"It's the same stuff every time . . . we know what we have to do but it's like we don't want to do it," King center Ian Laperriere said.

In losing for the 12th time in their last 16 games, the Kings played better at times, but again had too many lapses to come close to winning their first road game since Dec. 3.

"It seems like nobody will step up and take the bull by the horns and lead," King Coach Larry Robinson said. "We work hard and try to get something going and then we make a bonehead play. We just stab ourselves in the foot.

"The bottom line is that I don't know if we're good enough. We're going up against teams who are bigger and stronger than us. But yet, we show signs of having the work ethic and then we turn around and show signs of being brain dead."

"We didn't play physical against these guys at all . . . they were allowed to roam free all night," Robinson said. "If it's a physical game, Turgeon is not as effective a player. Yet, he probably could have been out there in a dress and not have gotten a scratch."

Oh the horror. We used to be especially bad against the Blues and Hull.

Well, it was a Larry Robinson coached team, so there wasn't a whole lot of thought put into what he was doing, like how he ran Yanic Perreault out of LA and did the same with Duchesne, who went on to perform a lot better under a better coach and organization (at that time) when he signed with the Wings.

...that and Robinson should have called a time out in that debacle of a playoff series with the Blues.
