it amazes me how many times a player breaks his stick in the defensive zone and stands there like a pylon while the other team passes around him. If it's the 2nd period I can understand the hesitation to skate to the bench to grab a stick. But 1st and 3rd period, in most all instances, it's probably more beneficial to take the extra 5 seconds to get a damn stick instead of just standing there.

because fumbles are a very important stat in football. and they are very important plays. the nhl would do well to keep track of players that break/drop their sticks. it can indicate problems with the equipment staff all the way to players who are just prone to dropping their sticks.

That would be a great stat. LA Kings sign "Insert name here" for 2.5 million, last season he scored 3 goals, had 5 assists, was -7, but only dropped his stick 1 time.

If this is the point you're trying to make, then the proper stat the NHL should keep track of is turnovers. How many times an NFL player fumbles the ball and loses possesion should only compared to how many times an NHL player loses control of the puck and is picked up by an opposing player, NOT how many times a player loses his stick. If someone loses their stick, they pick it up again or skate to the bench and grab another. A running back doesn't run over to the sideline and grab another ball to run with if he fumbles and loses the ball.

Ummmm....wow. I don't even know where to start with this one.

Part of the problem with your argument is that, while you phrase it as a question, you really start by declaring a dropped stick to be of similar significance to a fumble in football, without evidence or argument in support, and then proceed to argue that, because of that, the statistic should be kept. But a dropped stick has nowhere near the significance of a fumble in football. A fumble in football effects a change of possession, and possession of the ball in football is obviously a completely different thing than possession of the puck in hockey. On occasion, a dropped stick might make it easier for the opponent to score, but more often than not a dropped stick (as opposed to a broken stick) is quickly retrieved without any significant impact on the the game play. Even if the stat were kept, how could it be regarded as useful when the significance/impact of a dropped stick depends on the particular circumstances in which it occurred, as well as numerous other variables? What if the person who drops a stick is a forward leaving the offensive zone for a line change and retrieves the stick only a second after dropping it? Are you going to keep different stats for drops occurring in the offensive and defensive zones? Length of time without a stick?

I don't see how a dropped stick can show that there could be a problem with the equipment staff. If a players drops his stick how is it the problem of the staff? Most players tape their own sticks, not the staff. There is no correlatiob between a dropped stick and a fumble. As mentioned, a turnover is closer to a fumble because you have a change in possession. However, you're still comparing apples and, I don't know, ummm...cucumbers here, not even apples and oranges.
