I would have done the trade back then in a heartbeat and would still do the trade now.

Is this real life?
Seriously?
We did win the Cup, right? We beat the team that schenn and Simmonds lost to, right?
I do this trade without hesitation or regret.
Mike Richards > Schenn + Simmonds.
Mike Richards has won at every level a competition he has played. As much as Simmonds was a fan favorite, and Schenn MIGHT become a Stanley Cup champion, this trade was another move by Deano that had a bigger goal in mind, and it worked marvelously. Richards may not be the flashiest player, but there is a reason he has won everywhere.
And while we are at it, the Smyth trade for Fraser and the Teubert trade for Penner were good mives also!
Whoa whoa, chill out! Why do all forum topics have to be "serious"? I mean, it's not life or death or fall hockey, it's summer time, absolutely nothing is going on and a lockout is on the way - we can't think about how it'd all go if that trade wasn't made?
This is off-topic and I'd hate to go down this rabbit hole, which will lead to chaos, but I'm just wondering how the Kings would've done in the playoffs without Richards.
Instead of having Mike Richards in as the second-line center, we had Jeff Carter (no slouch) as the 2C, with Penner on the LW and Simmonds on the RW, and Brayden Schenn as the 3C/4C. Not so terrible, right? If that lineup would have been disastrous in the playoffs, then that consequentially means that Mike Richards = Stanley Cup, and of course, I want the Stanley Cup! If that's the case, of course, I say we make that trade every single time.
But this whole dismissive attitude that "We don't talk about this sort of thing!" is kind of preposterous. I don't think it's anywhere near as clear-cut as some here think it is, and because reasonable minds can differ, shouldn't we be able to post about it? Really, what else are we gonna talk about?
In short, absolutely no regrets.
Carter is a goal scorer and is better on the wing. I have no stats to back this up, but as a personal preference, I want snipers on the side, and play makers in the middle. The intangibles Richards brings to his team are measured better when not looking entirely at the offensive numbers. I would be prefectly happy if Simmonds and Schenn one day win a Cup, then this would truly be a winner/winner trade.
It may have taken 6 months to orchestrate, but Carter/Richards ended up being a package deal. I do not think the Kings win the Cup without 3 things happening
1) Sutter
2) Richards trade
3) Carter trade
Any when they start this next season, I like them to make another run.
Kings won the cup this year. It isn't even an after thought to me. Simmonds will be missed but having Kopitar/Richards/Stoll down the middle sounds more like a cup winning formula than Kopitar/Stoll/Schenn + Loktionov. Maybe that will change in a few years but as of now there are no regrets.
I only regret the Kings had to lose Schenn...not Simmonds. Then again, where would the kid play?
So, no, I do that deal again....every day of the week...and twice on Sunday as they say.
