Default National Hockey Card Day - February 16th

    To you collectors out there,

Just wanted to let everyone know that Saturday is National Hockey Card Day - and several shops in the area have free packs to hand out.

The Upper Deck Company | Sports

What's cool this year is that several of the cards are Kings-related, including singles of Quick, Brown and Kopitar. Any special this year - the final card in the 16 card set is only available as a free gift with any purchase - and that is a Jonathan Quick Memorable Moments Card. There are also some rare autographs of Brendan Smith, Chris Kreider and Alex Ovechkin only available in these packs.

All of the shops are working together for this event, as we're hoping to help bring hockey cards back into the mainstream! Remember to take your little ones with you wherever you stop by! Supplies are limited - we received less than 100 packs and less than 50 Quick cards.

This is nationwide, so check it our for a location near you!

Thanks for the info, and I do buy cards from time-to-time but I only have about maybe 15 or so. Are they worth collecting these days tho? I am thinking on return of investment etc

Give away starts on Sat AM, right? My husband and I have an extensive collection of cards from the late 80's through 95 or 96 (Gretzky era). Lost my Robitaille rookie card....boo...makes me sad. Would be nice to get the Quick card!

As an investment, no. Absolutely not. That's not what they were originally created for, though, so I think the entire hobby needs to reinvent itself. I don't mind a set or two for the speculators, but so much of our business now is geared towards wealthy clients who don't even read the names of the card when then open then - very sad. I'd love to see more kids involved in the hobby, as well as the average fan looking for cool cards of their favorite players. For example - this year Upper Deck continued with their "Day With The Cup" inserts for all the Kings players. They are VERY hard to pull however, so a guy like Jordan Nolan or Alex Martinez might sell for $20-30, while guys like Doughty and Quick can run into the hundreds. Out of play for the average person now.

Truthfully - these cards might be work getting for one major point - Canadians won't have these, and that's 80% of the hockey card market!

Yes . . . our shop opens at 11, but I'm sure other shops have different times. The Quick card may eventually have a decent secondary market value as long as Upper Deck doesn't screw it up.

thanks for posting this. my husband was totally interested in it. he took my daughter to get donuts and hockey cards as soon as she woke up (while i slept in). they've both been collecting cards. i'm not particularly sure why he does this, but he collects mostly cheap rookie cards from every year going back the last few years as well as all the kings (just one of each player that's been on the roster and maybe some of the nice jersey cards that come out). i think it just gives him something to do that isn't terribly time consuming and is a relatively inexpensive hobby. nothing like my record collection... he got a brown and two quick cards--one from the hockey day in america pack and the other was the memorable moments one. not sure if he got any day with the cup inserts though. i'd have to ask him since i didn't look through what him and the kid got. anyway, those made his day so thank you for bringing this to my attention!
