Default NHL to change draft lottery rules

The National Hockey League announced today changes to its Draft Lottery, a weighted system implemented and utilized to determine the order of selection in the first round of the NHL Draft for the 14 Clubs not qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs (or the Clubs that have acquired the first-round drafting positions of those non-playoff teams).

These changes will be phased in over a two-year period, beginning with the Draft Lottery in 2015.

    2016 NHL Draft Lottery

Beginning in 2016, the Draft Lottery will be utilized to assign the top three drafting slots in the NHL Draft, an expansion over previous years when the Draft Lottery was used to determine the winner of the first overall selection only.

Three draws will be held: the 1st Lottery draw will determine the Club selecting first overall, the 2nd Lottery draw will determine the Club selecting second overall and the 3rd Lottery draw will determine the club selecting third overall.

As a result of this change, the team earning the fewest points during the regular season will no longer be guaranteed, at worst, the second overall pick. That club could fall as low as fourth overall.

The allocation of odds for the 1st Lottery draw will be the same as outlined above for the 2015 NHL Draft Lottery. The odds for the remaining teams will increase on a proportionate basis for the 2nd Lottery draw, based on which Club wins the 1st Lottery draw, and again for the 3rd Lottery draw, based on which Club wins the 2nd Lottery draw.

The 11 Clubs not selected in the Draft Lottery will be assigned NHL Draft selections 4 through 14, in inverse order of regular-season points.

Why so you like it? Just asking because I'm wary of lottery shenanigans. Pittsburgh winning after the lockout season seemed to convenient.

Also are you coming up for any of training camp?

So, basically they're implementing the NBA-style lottery?

Personally, I'm not a fan of lottery. I prefer the NFL-style. Doughty would've been 1st overall in '08 instead of 2nd.

I probably won't make it up at all.

My reasoning for liking the lottery is to give greater chance for teams who competed better, but still missed the playoffs, multiple chances to move up in the draft. With one lottery pick, they have one chance. With three lottery picks, they have three.

It also doesn't guarantee a top pick for frequently mismanaged teams like the Isles and Oilers. They have to face the reality their draft position may fall.

As for the lottery shenanigans, I don't think it's happening but even if it really did happen, the only change is the lottery will also determine the 2nd and 3rd overall picks. If the corruption is already there, then you should take issue with the lottery in general.

Instead of a lottery, the team in last place the greatest percentage of the season gets the first pick, and it's determined at the trade deadline.

Something like that instead of this lottery ****.

    This lottery **** is ****.

Then again teams "tanking" would become more blatant and would happen frequently (I know, contradicting myself)

It appears you did not comprehend my post at all, unless you think teams would tank the entire season up until the trade deadline, something that has probably never happened in any North American major league professional sports league ever.

Just give every team that misses the playoffs the same chance of getting each of the first 14 spots in the draft. Having the same loser teams (Edmonton now, Ottawa a while back) collect #1 and #2 picks for almost a decade because they are frighteningly inept and/or tanking is weak. Maybe have it where teams can move up 8 spaces max so that the good teams that just miss the playoffs (especially in the west) aren't gifted with a superstar.

A live draw would also be nice, so Pittsburgh doesn't magically win when they are in danger of moving.
