great guy, really smart, helluva defenseman and teammate. 17-years, a Stanley Cup, and a heavy influence on younger defensemen wherever he went... won't ever see the Hall of Fame, but should always be remembered.

talk about someone who'd easily have a future behind the bench, or behind a mic.

Default Former King (and awesome dude) Sean O'Donnell retires

Veteran O'Donnell calling it quits after 17 NHL seasons

After 1,224 regular season games in the National Hockey League, veteran defenceman Sean O'Donnell is calling it a career.

The 41-year-old spent last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, playing in 51 games and recording seven assists.

O'Donnell, who won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Anaheim Ducks in 2006-07, played with nine teams during his 17-year career.

The stay-at-home defenceman leaves the game with 31 goals and 198 assists in the regular season.

OD is great....hope he can land a coaching gig somewhere. Remember when his rookie year with the Kings he was pretty much a pure fighter with limited skills. Amazing to see his development.

Great guy who always seemed a little underrated to me. Not saying his jersey should be in the rafters, but it would be nice if the Kings did something small for him before a game or during an intermission this year.

I was half-hoping the Kings would pick him up with Willie out and them needing a vet. I guess his skills have deteriorated to the point where that wasn't an option. He was a class act.

Very solid guy. Especially the second time around.

Career states as a King (first time around): 381GP, 12G-59A-71, 799 PIM, +/- 0. Second time around: 160GP, 3G-24A-27, 141 PIM, +16. OD led the 08-09 team with a +2 (only four other players that season had a positive number (O'Sullivan, Greene, Williams, and Westgarth were all +1). The next season, he had a +14, and eleven other regulars also had positive numbers. Not that there weren't other changes during that period, but he was an important influence in the team's development in Terry Murray's first two seasons.

Interestingly, in 2001, after moving from the Kings to the Wild in the 2000 expansion draft, OD was traded by the Wild to New Jersey for Willie Mitchell.

Unfortunately, when I think of Sean O'Donnell, the first thing that comes to mind is this: Geoff Courtnall vs Sean O'Donnell, Apr 27, 1998 - Blues vs Kings - hockeyfights.com.
