If I were commissioner? First, get rid of the Instigator Rule.
I'm not sure what the split should be between players and owners, but the league has really boosted revenues and that is due to the quality of the game on the ice. I just hate to see the little guy hurt- the vendors and everyone else that gets revenue from the games. Lots of jobs are at stake.
The same Donald Fehr that f'd over MLB and led the players into a strike that cancelled the playoffs and World Series?
Due to that owners of every major league sport will never let the players start a season without a CBA that they are happy with. The current CBA allows the owners to opt out at this point in time, and I think with the number of teams that are losing money, you can't blame them for doing just that.
Perhaps I did over-exaggerate with the "many a team" thing.....but what's next, 20 year contracts? At some point a team could, in theory, be made up entirely of players who are too old/injured to play and have little money for quality new players.
More realistically, I can see a team having to pass on some up and coming players (who are now wanting long, big money contracts) because they are locked in to some incredibly long contract with a player they can't unload.
And now I guess I have come full circle to why the negotiations are so difficult! :)
That I wouldn't do. They did that in baseball and the players struck just before the world series (when the players had all the leverage). I assume like baseball the hockey playoffs make the owners lots of money. Both sides need to get this done but no way do I allow play without a CBA unless it's simply dotting i's and crossing t's.
