Sounds like they are almost there.
"After a week of negotiations, the N.H.L. and its players association have drawn close to agreement on several key issues, remaining far apart in only one main area: players' contract rights" -- i.e., the one area that's really important, and "far apart" in the same way that Earth and the black hole Cygnus X-1 are "far apart." :-(

"Fehr said he did not 'see a path to an agreement' on contract rights." Someone needs to photoshop Fehr's head on Eeyore's body.

and they shouldn't give back the money, on the flip side most of the 700+ players will not earn anything this season so not sure who wins?

So we have most of the players not making any money this year and the 12 owners that do make money in the NHL will not earn hockey money other than the TV portion, however they have other interests making money for them this season. The other 17 owners are breaking even for once in hockey but will make money because they have other interests. Phoenix was left out.

So what happens if the season is cancelled and you had a bet in Vegas that the Kings would win the cup? Do they carry it over to next season? Lose the money? Or get it back?

I would imagine that legally they would have to give the money back if there is no season played. They wouldn't want to carry it over because they'd want to set new odds after an offseason of moves.

Yeah, it would be graded as "no action" and you'd get your money back.

So I haven't been pessimistic through out all this. I thought they would realize that another cancellation would kill the golden goose they worked so hard to get since the last stoppage. I was obviously too stupid to think that sanity or rationality would reign. They are going to kill this year and any relevance they had. Really, really a shame ... I guess there is a golden lining - at least the Kings won the last Stanley Cup ....

think the owners really want the 5 year contract limit (how many players get more than 5 year deals), players want free agency at 27/7 years.
split the middle and lets play hockey.

From a fan POV, I'd MUCH rather have 28/8 and a 7 year limit (or some such). I think it somewhat ruins things when there is a lot of player turnover....but, yeah, let's get this done.

Unless you aren't sharing something that we all don't know, I think you're wrong. Regardless of how the broke off negotiations on Friday and went to the media hype, they still stayed in touch over the weekend. After the HOF break, I think they're going to sit down and hammer out the rest, and we have hockey by December 15th.
jom, roenick, FishMonger and 1 others like this.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I think you are probably correct but you can't deny that their actions (or rather NON action) have made many pessimistic. And given the past history....what would you expect?
