Some players would make more, but many more would make less (due to the floor).

Either way, with no cap, several teams would likely fold in 3 - 5 years, starting with Phx. Would the NHLPA want fewer teams - i.e. union members? And all the UFA talent would flow to the 5 - 10 teams with huge budgets to spend, setting up a tier system of teams. Could the Kings compete salary-wise with TO, Mtl, NYR, Vanc, or Philly? probably not.

a truly free market could have contracts for multiple years. guaranteed or not.* whatever they could negotiate. The true winners in that case would be the elite players. Crosby could have gotten 25M from Toronto.

*Except for contract length. there are some statutory limits there that I don't remember.

Which, in turn, turns it into an advantage for...say...the Rangers, who overpay EVERYBODY, then end up unloading those ridiculous contracts to teams struggling to reach that cap floor. That way, the Rags can keep luring all the UFAs with huge contracts, while unloading the guys (Gomez) with other huge contracts, that didn't pan out. Then the team that gets those players (The Habs) stay in perpetual sucktitude because they need to SOMEHOW reach the floor, without being able to land the top UFAs, because, well, they suck and the UFAs wouldn't want to go there anyway.
