The last sessions broke off when bettman refused any wiggle room on the contract issues. none. the nhl has repeatedly gone with the "our way or the highway" ultimatums. Maybe bettman thought the union would cave after losing another players check. they beat the union last time, and expect to do so again. can't say I think they are wrong. the owners have the upper hand because their money comes from later in the season. And better cba agreements raise the value of their franchises. Many are better off waiting until the last minute.
players have to play to make their money. and they don't have very long to do it. so far the teams that do make profit are willing to sit and wait, anticipating bigger future profits. (at least for now. Ed Snider may be reconsidering)
