Because they're not the ones who mismanaged the franchises they play/have played for. They also didn't lock themselves out. The owners and Bettman are the ones solely to blame for the actual implementation of the lockout. However, the NHLPA is the side that can be blamed for the continuation of the lockout. The owners have to "win" or the NHL will be vastly different from what it has been in recent years, if the NHL is to survive at all. I believe the NHLPA doesn't realize the reality of the NHL, from financial success to popularity. Although, the lack of financial success isn't the NHLPA's fault. To me, it's not as easy as picking a side. This isn't a game. This isn't like the Kings versus the mighty sucks. One group is to blame for the actual lockout, and the other group is to blame for the continuation of the lockout.
