I don't buy the physical risk aspect either. Nobody forced them into that profession, similar to firemen and crab fishermen.

I see employees have an inflated sense of self-worth all the time. My dad used to remind me when I was acting like my crap doesn't stink: JFK was assassinated and the world didn't end. Meaning, everyone is replaceable.
No one forced the owners to buy a hockey team either. There is no promise of profits in owning something. Do you see how this circular stuff can be fun?

When you're in an agreement together as these two sides are, it's not just a "go pound sand" attitude. The owners in this case are the idiots. They cried last time (rightfully) about the league being out of control. The players gave back just about everything. What happened? The owners went nuts and started handing out awful contracts again. Of course, the mouthpiece of the owners (Bettman) has been saying that the league has never been better and that the last three years have seen incredible growth...but now we need to pull everything back again. The owners are doing everything they can to try and secure a profit, but this isn't the NFL. Sorry.

The players and owners should both try to get what is best for them, that is the way it works. Our contract for work expired in July of 2011 and we just settled it a few weeks ago. We wanted 3% raise, they wanted to give us nothing and we settled on 1%. IT works for both sides as we realize that the economics of it won't allow for much more than that. Plus we are happy to have a job. The good thing in our negotiations is we worked under the old deal and we did not have to worry about upsetting our fans, which the NHL parties seem to forget about everytime they negotiate.

You are making it circular when it shouldn't be. You are def. correct that there should not be any promise of profits. Business is business. If they cannot turn a profit and go under due to owners' CBA requirements that the players will not agree to, or charging too little for season seats, or whatever other myriad of bad decisions, then so be it. The owners SHOULD dictate the terms, no one is forcing the players to agree to those said terms.

I don't understand why owners pay players at all. i mean, any one of us would in a heartbeat drop what we are doing so we could play professional hockey with the la kings. and if they players dont like it, I'll play for free. i don't even care if i can't pay my rent or take care of my family.

    /sarcasm

for those who believe the owners take all the risk. please. How's bruce mcnall doing today? How is it that a majority of teams can continue to lose money each year? What about the owners of the atlanta thrashers. Are they hurting today? Oh, but what about their employees? yeah, the guy who works the ticket booth or the person in concessions had to find a new job. who shouldered the risk?

And to the moron who think that a player can just buy a team...you know i didnt like my job working at mcdonalds so i just bought mcdonalds now i dont need to work ever again.

That's the point. If you can't buy McDonald's, you are not in a position to tell them what to pay you or what concessions they should make to you.

Maybe you should stick to something more your speed, like coloring books.

Only if Bettman, the owners, and the NHLPA say it's ok.

I think the owners and the players union should continue to make offers and counter-offers until they come to mutually acceptable terms.

It's circular because you're taking one side and saying that's the only side that is relevant. Well, not according to the anti-trust laws that are set up. The owners can't unilaterally decide terms because of that very pesky CBA that they're part of. That means the players have to agree with the owners. Further, the OWNERS are the ones stopping the league yet again. The players have said they'd be more than willing to extend the terms of the current CBA. Why won't it happen? Because they owners want a promise of profit...just like you said there shouldn't be. The owners keep moving the goalposts. That's all there is to it. The players gave the owners freaking EVERYTHING in the last CBA and the owners still couldn't keep from putting a gun in their mouths. Welp, the league is doing as well as it's ever done, and so it's just about time for them to **** it up again.
