Why is he sitting pretty? He won't get paid this year and he's not getting a fat signing bonus like some players (Parise $10 mil, Suter $10 mil, B. Richards $10 mil, Weber $13 mil) payable even if there's a lockout.

Zach's $10 million signing bonus I'm sure will make it easier for him to sleep during this lockout.

Couple other things from this thread....

    1) Crosby in theory could pay through the nose for insurance on his NHL contract so if he were injured playing in the KHL, he would be covered salary wise. The problem for him is that any sort of insurance policy would probably not cover a concussion related injury. He'd also probably want to take out insurance on this year's contract plus his 12 year $104 mil new contract that kicks in in 2013. That's not going to be cheap to insure. To me, the idea of a career ending injury in the KHL this year and the fact the Penguins could suspend him for getting hurt overseas makes it too risky for him to play, even if he does get insurance. He'd still lose out on all the endorsement income he could potentially make over his career. I could just see some KHL scrubs totally trying to target Crosby.

    2) As fans, we might get indignant over lockouts or strikes but the fans are never going to be a priority for either side everyone needs to accept it. Owners know exactly what they can charge that people will still pay and that's what they're going to charge. You might see things like concession/merchandise specials when the game comes back, but there's never going to be a long term roll back on prices on tickets, food, or merchandise. Owners care about their profits and players are looking out for themselves.

Here's a couple of tweets from everyone's favorite, Paul Bissonnette, in case they were missed.

Fans. The players understand your frustration. But at the end of the day we are fighting for our futures, not yours. That's the reality.
And I would take a pay cut if owners would lower ticket prices for all the loyal fans like you. But they won't.

I call BS on the 2nd one. No person in their right mind would voluntarily take a reduction in their salary as a player if it meant lower ticket prices. Most of these guys are not set up to have a post-playing career that pays a lucrative salary. They're not going to lower their income, especially a 4th line goon that isn't paid much compared to other players in the league, for the fans.

    3) Saw this on Puck Daddy....the lockout drinking game. A shot for every time you hear a player say something along like, "We just want to play."

Yeah thank goodness air fuel, luggage, medical, equipment, hotels, etc... haven't gone up to cut into those revenues.

Why would you think that? With the lawsuits settled after the last lost season, and the fact the NHL does not own the Stanley Cup, it could likely be given to the next best hockey champion. I think any North American team hockey organization can put in a claim to it if no NHL season takes place. There was talk of giving it to the gals last time, and this time it could very likely happen. I think it would be cool... I'm wondering if we'll start hearing about union desertification like we did in Football and Basketball? The players may very well want to take their chances in court if it looks like they'll miss a whole season. I'm also guessing the NHL owners will be ready if it happens.

I would be absolutely shocked if that happened. To me, the NHLPA looks and seems extremely unified.

On the first one, he does realize that the fans pay for his well-being and future, right? No fans = no well-being/future to fight for.

To me they look more like they are hung over, waiting for a group drug test.

Has nothing to do with being united. Has everything to do with opening up more court options to them. If they don't decertify, they're forced to negotiate by the rules of the CBA. If they do, they can file antitrust lawsuits as individuals against the league. I might not have all my ducks in a row, but I believe that's the gist of it.

Did he not get paid 7 million last year? That is why he is sitting pretty. What if he would have signed for two years at 3 million? I would rather have 7 million and a lockout than one year at 3 million and a lockout.
