The NHL wanted to negotiate over a year ago. The NHLPA said "**** off."

What good does negotiating the night before do if the NHL is the only one compromising on its numbers? The PA has kept an eerily similar proposal throughout, not to mention they sat on the NHL's first proposal for an eternity. Do you really think Donald Fehr "wants to make a deal?" He was at the center of the cancellation of the World Series, for ****'s sake.

Because the NHL wanted to negotiate during the playoffs knowing not every team would have their player representative at the meeting(s).

Clearly that precluded them from negotiating anytime after the 2011 playoffs...

The NHLPA did want to negotiate after the 2011 playoffs, but the NHL said no. I don't have a link for that, but that's what I heard on 590The Fan in Toronto a few mornings back.

The NHLPA hasn't wanted to negotiate until this summer. I don't care if you blame the owners. They're greedy. Thing is, so are the players and their slimy general. None of this is one side's fault. There's plenty of blame to go around, and it falls at all feet involved.

"We talked with the Union this morning and in light of the fact that they have nothing new to offer, or any substantive response to our last proposal, there would be nothing gained by convening a bargaining session at this time," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told TSN. "I'm sure that we will remain in contact in the coming days."
So you are saying that they should be in the same room and not talk? The owners basically asked: Are the players going to say something other than what they have already said? If so, then talks can happen. If not then that offer has been rejected already.

I am not saying the owners have come up with anything new, just the players have said only one thing as well.
To me the talks have been
League months ago saying lets talk because we can't (won't) play next season with the current deal
NHLPA saying don't worry there is lots of time
    several months pass
Stupid proposal A from the NHL that says how about you make what we make and we make what you make
    another month passes
Lame idea ONE from NHL PA saying lets keep it the same but Toronto pays Phoenix something, and Phoenix can lower the cap floor by letting the Devils spend even more money.
Nhl says how about our proposal A with slightly different numbers.
PA says how about we stick with idea ONE
    NHL nope proposal A
PA idea ONE work for us
NHL ok how about proposal A
    lock out
PA hey they stopped talking to us.
NHL no we just stopped listening to you.
