Making sense of hockey-related revenue | Hockey | CBC Sports
    3.3B / 30 teams = $110MM/team on average
    $110MM x 57% = 62.7MM

wouldn't that be how they set the salary cap?

or does it go into the escrow system and what the players get on a contract isn't really what they get on that contract after other costs are deducted?

II am bitter about the lockout but I am more disappointed that we are not going to see our three best home grown players set personal best in what tends to be a players best year:

    Kopitar - 25
    Brown - 26
    Quick - 26

On that same note you have guys who should be having their last really strong year, not to mention contract expiration. So there you have it. Having four of our SC winning team members lose their last effective year is going to be a huge blow.

    Mitchell -35
    Scuderi - 33
    Stoll - 30
    Williams - 30

Rookies poised to make a big impact in my opinion:

    Alec Martinez
    Slava Voynov

I hate these players whining already aka Ovi who makes 9.5 mill. By the time this lockout is over players are going to lose a lot more. At the end of the day owners always go nuts and throw the money at players. Most players don't even deserve the salaries they are getting . At this time I completely support the owners

Huh? Didn't Mitchell have an "effective year" last year (at age 34)? And didn't Chris Chelios have "effective years" into his 40s? If so, why do you say 2012/13 will be the "last effective year" for Scuderi, Stoll, and Williams (all of whom will be the same age as, or younger than, Mitchell was last season), and why assume that Mitchell can't have several more "effective years"?

Seeing as how they have 115 and 54 NHL games under their belts respectively, I don't believe either is a rookie any longer.

All of which is not to say that I don't completely agree that the lockout potentially kills a lot of momentum for a lot of our best players.

They can't set the cap at that level unless each and every team is forced to spend up to the cap to reach the correct ratio. This is why there is a cap and a floor with escrow, and if the averages are below the 57% mark, the differences are issued.

They can play that game forever. Difference being a player will lose most of his income while most NHL owners won't feel a thing.

Majority of the players will not get paid. They will not be too happy come late October.
