Well so far none of the Kings have gone on twitter like Krys Barch and said stupid things like comparing themselves to factory workers or truck drivers, wished they lived in the Wild West days when you could settle things with a gun, or implied that 50-75% of NHL players are going to have to work for the next 50 years.

Sometimes, wondering if I should have existed when a word and a gun solidified and solved all problems. I feel the Wild West would more simplified than the world we live in now when an employer who makes billions of dollars and a league with record revenues can tell me that I can't do the things that my heart tells my me to do!
"I wonder if the owners of Boston, New York, Washington, etc, etc, have endured any of the injuries that I or any other player in the NHL have endured. Still they probably sit their smoking the same brand of cigar, sipping the same cognac, and going on vacation. To one of five houses they own. While we sit here knowing they want to take 20% of our paychecks. One half to 3/4 of my peers will have to work for the next 50 years of their lives.

Yep, that rant makes me sooooooo sympathetic to the players cause now.

Thanks owners and Bettman. You really know how to run a business. NOT!

But things are never that simple, which brings us to Phoenix.
The league has owned the troubled club since 2009 and has received $50 million in subsidies from the city of Glendale to underwrite the cost of keeping the club there. Meanwhile the incoming owner -- in theory Greg Jamison -- is supposed be getting $324 million in subsidies over the next 20 years from the city to operate Jobing.com Arena.
So quick -- are the subsidies the NHL has received and that the new owner (and we say 'in theory' because, yanno, this is the Coyotes, so we'll believe it when we see it) will be getting hockey-related revenue, or not?
Is the money supposed to be used to fund the operating expenses of the hockey team? Or is it to cover the losses incurred by the arena?
And before you answer that, keep in mind that NHLPA views having a team in Phoenix at all as a significant drag on the revenues their members get to share in. If the Coyotes were moved to a stronger hockey market -- let's just fantasize and say Southern Ontario -- it might bump up HRR by $150 million overnight or $750 million over a five-year CBA.
But they have no say in that, which irks them to no end. And after helping prop up the sadsack Coyotes they wouldn't get a sniff of the massive relocation fee that league owners would likely get if and when the team were ever moved. It's the kind of thing that drives the players nuts.
For obvious reasons the NHL thinks those subsidies shouldn't be part of HRR going forward. Meanwhile the NHLPA figures that the only reason the citizens of Glendale have forked over millions of dollars of their tax money and more to come is because there's an NHL team there, so yes, count the subsidies as part of HRR

Boy I have some mixed feelings on this one.

Here is a journeyman NHL'er who hasn't probably made a ton of money in the NHL and has suffered many injuries to get where he is. But he made these choices so his whining comes off as shallow and self serving. His minimum salary should have at least put him ahead of most truck drivers, etc. BTW does anyone know the present NHL minimum salary? I thought it was close to $500K?

I have got to say the owners are the problem here though. They continue to go to the well (the players) to continue to ask for more and more when they have gotten everything in recent stoppages. The bottom line is that the game has grown, in terms of popularity and revenues, since the last stoppage. And just when the league (and the game) was on the verge of gaining serious popularity. Does anyone else remember when this happened before to the NHL? It was after the 1994 season when SI had a cover story that was two pictures splitting the page with the headline something like "The NHL is hot/the NBA is not!"

The NHL is screwing this up again. Thanks Gary ....

Barch has made over $4.5 million in his career...as a joke of player. He has no right to act as if he is one of the common folk.

And what relevancy does the NHL getting what it wanted last lockout have here? The system is clearly in need of fixing with only a select few teams carrying the league's revenues. Just because the NHL "won" last time doesn't mean they should "lose" this time. The NHL "winning" last time worked out pretty damn well for the players in the long run. There's a reason they don't want to budge from their stance, and that's because they know how much they benefited from "losing" last time.

If you look at the salary page on Cap Geek, the contracts that they have listed for Barch (granted it does include this year and next so he won't be getting all of that money) have his contract values at a little over $4.3 mil for 6 NHL seasons. He made over $800k last year so even after taxes/agent fees etc, he's definitely ahead of a factory worker or truck driver unless he's been throwing away his money.

His job isn't a fun one. I don't think there are too many people that grow up and have NHL enforcer as #1 on their list of career choices. I don't get angry about the amount of money that athletes make because they have a skill that people are willing to pay lots of money to see. People don't want to pay lots of money to come watch me teach or my brother in law do IT work or my cousin work on rockets at Boeing. I think it gets frustrating to a lot of people, when someone who has already earned millions for being a 4th liner and bashing people's face in starts complaining and making comments like they'll have to work another 50 years. News flash Krys, most people don't make enough money in a 5-10 year career to live from the rest of their lives.

I said before that the PA should really prevent players from tweeting because they're going to say something dumb that annoys a lot of people. It's not a PR battle they can win. I saw the other night a few people were giving Quick crap, telling him things like "Go back to work *******!". I don't think the players deserve things like that and I can see why it would be hard for players to ignore. But going on twitter and drunk ranting about wishing you lived in the Old West days so that you could use a gun to settle problems makes you look like an idiot.

It seemed like the majority of people were on the PA's side to start, but I've seen more and more start to resent the PA because of stuff like this.
