    From that article:

''They have made some incremental moves,'' said Donald Fehr, who expects to informally talk with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman by Wednesday. ''It's clear that the players have made substantial moves towards the owners and the owners have made substantial moves away from the players.
Did I miss when the players made "substantial moves"? What were these substantial moves.

Elliotte Friedman said they spent the weekend arguing over things like players wanting a 2nd trainer on the road and no more sharing of hotel rooms and want the owners picking up the extra costs. All I took from that as the players, who have been telling the owners to cut their costs, not wanting cost-cutting measures coming at anything that might hurt their comfort levels. I read somewhere that they were arguing over thread count on the sheets in the hotels. Granted, that might be an exaggeration, but it doesn't sound like too much of one.

If this is truly the case, the players are very out of touch with reality. These numbnuts need to figure this out.

If that is the case, how about the players pay for their own damn room with the millions of dollars a year they make!!!

    Professional athlete people problems. -______-

As I've said before, these spoiled brats have no idea how good they have it. A lot of these guys started playing after the last lockout too so they never experienced a second contract. They just got their millions right off the bat. They have no idea what it's doing to the people who work at the arenas or surrounding restaurants, etc. They probably don't care. If I remember correctly, they already got $100/day for food. Plus 4 or 5 star hotels. That's not bad if you ask me.

From Bill Daly, "I'm really not sure where we go from here. We have done everything we can think of to try to engage the PA and invite them into a negotiation. But they aren't biting. I guess their definition of negotiating is making a proposal and standing pat until the other side accepts it."

    From Friedman:
If you have any doubt what a stalemate the NHL lockout has become, consider this: talks took a step backward last weekend because the league and the NHL Players' Association could not agree on who should pay for a) an extra trainer on the road and b) for each player to have his own hotel room.

Players felt teams should pay for both, especially since an extra trainer is a safety issue. Apparently, some teams only travel with one. As for single rooms, well, they've been fighting for that since Matt Stajan made Joe Nieuwendyk watch The Fifth Wheel. Right now, you can be solitary if you've played 600 NHL games.
NHL landscape littered with landmines | Hockey | CBC Sports

I can see the 2nd trainer thing potentially being a safety issue and teams should probably pay for that. The room thing, if you want your own room and haven't qualified for it yet, I'm more inclined to say pay for it yourself.

On the one hand, it's completely ridiculous that this is one of the things that they're arguing about but on the other it's one of those things that does actually make a big additional expense. It's especially going to be an issue for teams on the West Coast that travel more and spend more nights in hotels than teams in the Eastern Conference. How many nights a year are the Kings on the road? Probably something like 70 nights, since it's not just 41 road games, because on a trip where you play Tues, Thurs, and Sat, you're on the road for 6 nights to play 3 games. 10 extra hotel rooms at $150/night x 70 nights would cost them an extra $105,000 in travel costs. 15 extra rooms is an extra $157,000. West coast teams can travel something like 20,000 miles than some teams in the Eastern conference, so their travel budgets are going to be higher anyway because of more charters, more jet fuel, etc. They're not going to go for another $100,000 in hotel rooms on top of that.

I'll be shocked if opening night (and many games after it) is not cancelled by the time tomorrow's presidential debate begins.

    100% agree.

Maybe if the players union started negotiating earlier they'd be in camp ready to start the season. Players made their bed now they need to sleep on it… with Donald Fehr.

Players are naïve if they think they won't be the ones giving back the most. Right or wrong it's the reality.

Tonight I'll be checking out the highlights of he 16-4 Cup run. I'm up to game 2 in Vancouver and smiling.
