Watching it live it looked like it was a good hockey play to me. Penner was using his size to his advantage and caught Kopi off guard. The suspension on Brown felt a little like BS anyway. So why have that BS suspension on Penner? *Shrug*

While it seems like most of you are allergic to the "like" button, I just want to personally say thanks for looking anyway.

because where the **** was that last year from penner?!

i'm sure the tape will be looked over by the dept of player safety like they claim they do on all games. but considering there was no injury on kopi unlike the cold shoulder/elbow from brown on pominville, and the fact that it doesn't really seem to be a clear elbow to the head (at least from what I've seen) I doubt anything will come from it. I still think it should have at least been a elbowing penalty, his elbow was out way too much for my liking.

I miss penner.. I miss his smell.

Default Penner's "cold shoulder" on Kopitar

I didn't have a problem with the hit, but it didn't look like he got Kopi's head to me.

I was at the game last night and it sure looked like a hit to the head at the time, lots of Kings fans near me all said the same thing, I'll watch the game tonight to get a better look but we were all calling for a penalty when we saw it.

It doesn't need to be "targeted"

The NHL has altered the wording of Rule 48.1 to better clarify an illegal check to the head, according to Elliotte Friedman of CBC on Monday afternoon.

The competition committee first recommended a change in the rule's wording to eliminate grey area. The rule was previously worded as such, via CBC:

"A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted."
According to Friedman, contention persisted over the concept of a player's decision to "target" an opponent's head. The NHL and NHL Players' Association both agreed to alter the definition of the rule, which has since been revised to this:

Now Rule 48.1 declares an illegal check to the head as "a hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable."
Friedman writes that an "avoidable" hit will be determined based upon the following criteria:

First, whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent's body and the head was not "picked" as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward.

Second, whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full body check unavoidable.

Third, whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact.
There is no "hysteria". The NHL seems to be taking the steps necessary to remove all head shots from the game. You may not like it, but that doesn't necessarily mean the rest of us are wrong to point it out.

Bitch move? He leaned back to brace himself for the hit and Kopi ran into a brick wall, a pudgy, squishy one but a brick wall none the less. If Brown did it we'd all be deep throating him. But Penner does it and its a bitch move? Wow, just wow.
