Tattoos are a different story. They (from my understanding) mostly drawn in advance by the artist and the customer picks it. Theoretically a goalie and an artist would be working together with the goalie having the ideas and the artist painting it. In a case like this, if it was agreed to, it would be work for hire, which means the rights would belong to the goalie.

I highly doubt the player has any ownership of the artwork. The artwork on my mask is signed by the artist and even though it is my mask, it is his artwork that I paid for. Technically I doubt I could create copies of the artwork for resale. But that does present an interesting question. The player cards depict a photograph of the player with all their gear on and these cards are sold by the NHL/PA. I know all gear manufacturers pay a licensing fee to have their logos displayed, I wonder how that works for goalie's masks. If I buy a picture of Quick, does the artist that painted Quick's mask see any of the money? If they don't, shouldn't they be entitled to a percentage?

Well, if one takes a picture of a street scene and sells it and there is a McDonalds, or a Toyota, or an ADIDAS logo do you think that that the artist should send some money to them?
