    Default On Quick's Cap Hit

I wrote a blog post on Quick's Cap hit, that I thought I'd share:

The Unsportsmanlike Comment - On Jonathan Quick’s Cap Hit - On Jonathan Quick's Cap Hit

    On Jonathan Quick’s Cap Hit

Since I keep seeing people complain about Quick’s cap hit, I thought I would take a closer look at it. Sure he has a Conn Smythe trophy, and he has won two cups in the past 3 seasons, but is he really worth the money?

If it was presented to you that Quick was going to have 9th highest cap hit of any goalie in the NHL next season, does that sound more reasonable?

So, who which comparable goalies have a higher cap hit next season you might ask?

    1. Varlamov, Semyon
    2. Lehtonen, Kari
    3. Crawford, Corey
    4. Miller, Ryan
    5. Ward, Cam
    6. Price, Carey
    7. Rask, Tuukka
    8. Rinne, Pekka

Are there any goalies on the list above that you could see Quick being more valuable than (hint the answer is yes)?

These comparable goalies have a lower cap hit:

    1. Backstrom, Niklas
    2. Niemi, Antti
    3. Pavelec, Ondrej
    4. Schneider, Cory
    5. Mason, Steve
    6. Halak, Jaroslav
    7. Hiller, Jonas
    8. Luongo, Roberto
    9. Fleury, M.
    10. Howard, Jimmy
    11. Bobrovsky, Sergei
    12. Smith, Mike

Note that I didn’t include rookies and other non-1A goalies (i.e. Gibson, and teams like Buffalo).

Quick’s Cap Hit is most similar to Mike Smith, Kari Lehtonen and Semyon Varlamov.

Quick’s NHL career stats compared to all of the comparable goalies listed:

    • 8th most games played
    • 8th most wins
    • 12th Best SV%
    • 3rd Best GAA
    • 3rd Most shutouts

Credit to Capgeek.com and hockey-reference.com for the stats.

When determining value, comparables must be taken into consideration. After comparing his cap hit to other starters around the league, Quick’s cap hit doesn't look that bad.

There are people complaining about Quick's cap hit?

I mean, you've gotta wonder if he'll see the end of the contract. And given his style, you can't be sure how effective he'll be in four or five years (there're 9 left on his current deal).

But today? Today, it's fine. Just fine.

I think it was supposed to be. Fell asleep half through it. Saving this thread to read again tonight in case I have to battle insomnia.

I've seen quite a few people say he is getting paid too much. I agree with you about later, but who knows what will happen in a few years...

Why did you choose to highlight cap hit vs actual salary???
LOL talk about presenting information in a unbiased manner
Quick (7 mil) actually has the 3rd highest salary next year after Lundqvist (11 mil), Rask (7.5 mil) and tied with Rinne (7 mil)..
In 2013-2014 he actually had the highest salary (tied with Rinne)....

No clue why you excluded Ben Bishop in your assessment..
Your propaganda skills would have made Goebbels envious!

Believe me there is nobody outside of the Kings organization I would rather have than Quick... but come on!

Does it matter if his contract is front loaded vs. having equal pay in every season? Would you like his contract more if it wasn't front loaded?

I never really understand the logic of pointing out actual salary.

    Thanks for your comments.

I used Cap Hit, as that is what effects the team's ability to sign other players.

I used CapGeeks list of comparables. Ben Bishop, has been a great goalie so far. However, he has only had one year on a contract that is above 650k. He has only been a starter on a team for 1 season. In the 6 years prior to last season, he had only played a total of 45 games (with the 2nd most being 22g in 2013). He has only played a total of NHL 108 games. I would not consider him a comparable.
