You have to know something about Russian culture to get where he's coming from (My BA is in Russian Studies and I lived in Russia for 3 years, so I have some experience with this). It really upsets Russians that Americans smile all the time but that it doesn't mean anything. Russians feel that acting like you're happy to see someone that you don't know (whether a cashier or someone on the street) when you don't mean/feel it is lying. Russians don't smile at strangers on the street. They feel that since they don't know you, they shouldn't pretend to be happy to see you because it's dishonest. If you go to the same store all the time, the cashiers will start smiling at you, but if you're new, they won't because they feel it would be lying to do so. They don't see it as not being nice, they see it as not lying.
I can see where Russians would have a difficult time with that here. It might be even weirder for them being athletes and having that extra attention. If they had normal jobs and had to take public transportation, they would probably get used to it faster.
